Exclamation

Need to compress a word document, perhaps into a self extracting archive ....
Winzip 8.0 compresses this 4.8MB file into 1.02MB.... but I need to get it under 1MB.....
When I compress it to a exe (ziptoexe) final size is 1.17MB which is too large a file....

I dont really want to split the document.
Any ideas computer bods ?

Question

Has it got images embedded ? Have you tried further compressing those first ?

The file does have embedded images within the document - how would I compress those images separately ??

Thanks,

Take them out, save them with higher compression in your image package (eg. Paint Shop Pro). Best to save as jpg with medium compression, see what the highest compression you can get away with is without too much quality loss.

Try reducing the size to the exact size you want them to be displayed in your document too. Scaling images in documents will increase the file size unnecessarily.

Disable 'Fast save' on Word, so it strips out deleted text, etc?

Word also saves your "changes" to documents aswell.

Try creating a brand new document - and copy/paste the whole of the old document into it. You may find the file size of the new doc is considerably less than the old one....

Cut and paste routine makes only a minimal change unfortuantely...
There are so many images dotted around that compressing those separately would be a real ball ache.....
Any other ideas - and other programs that can compress more ?

Try unlinking the embedded images within the document. I believe CTRL-F9 does this. Also, turn off fast saves (this will have the same effect as dsmith's suggestion though).

Cool

Awesome - winrar really compresses !
Now - can I convert it into a self extracting archive so that the person on the other end can extract it ?
....or do they need to download winrar ?

Cheers,

Gastro

Winrar will let you make a standalone self-extracting archive

mmmm how ? Tried to create an exe archive - but it seems identical to zip2exe and doesnt afford the extra compression that rar files have ?
Am i missing something simple !?
