Dell PC - silencing the modem "screech" ???
#2
My second dumb question of the day...
Just bought a new Dell laptop, but can't get the bloody modem connecting "screech" turned off, I've now got the speaker volume on mute as it's driving me nuts.
I've tried going into the modem settings thru Control Panel, and have switched the modem volume to "off" but this hasn't worked.
I checked a helpsite which said some modems cannot be switched off, does anyone know if this is the case? The modem is an integral laptop modem, it's not a PCIMI card (or whatever it's called!) type.
Cheers,
David.

Try entering M0 (letter M, number zero) in the Extra Initialisation Commands (find this on the Modem Properties > advanced tab)

I checked you E-mail address and it shows you use AOL.
To stop the modem dialing in AOL you have to actually set it in AOL. BTW, these instructions are for AOL 7.0, other versions may vary.
Click Setup
Click Expert Setup
Click Devices (modems, etc.) tab
Right click on device
Select Edit
Set speaker volume to Off/Low
Hope this helps
