I have a pioneer -R unit which is excellent. It means I can hire my games from Blockbusters, do a dvd copy and take em back
On a serious note though, I would go for the -R because it is more compatible with DVD drives, although +R is catching up. Also if u have a standalone dvd player or PS2, you will find that they (the ps2 especially) will only accept -R disks (and only good verbatim at that)

I have an idea...if you all send me a film/game, I will try all the different media, to see which DVD writer/media combo gives the best result

why not just get the drive that does both formats? then you can just pick and choose what you write in.
seriously though, it is a brand new drive and should be as good as a ricoh, but lets you do both.
if i wanted to write DVD, i'd buy that. if you dont like Sony, NEC also do a dual format one too.
