Plan on changing my OS, does anyone out there have any experience of this, or just any pointers on what else i might need.
I've already got a ps2 mouse as i tried very briefly once before and didn't get passed the first screen coz it wouldnt work without ps2 keyboard/mouse
copied all my files to disc, but what about new drivers, internet access, etc, etc
please keep all replies in laymans terms coz i'm clever that way
thanks
Davy

Done this 5 times now....
1. Defrag & Scan disk for errors
2. Save your modem drivers to A: (cos they won't work after you install XP)
3. Be patient as it takes a while.
4. When it reloads install your drivers for the modem
5. Go online via Help & Support, scan for updates (you'll get service pack 1 to install on its own first)
6. Restart re do 5, get the other updates and voila up to date!!!
7. Good luck!!!!!
It is simple as long as you save those modem drivers......have plenty of mags ready! as it is a long wait

Thanks for your help, BUT, could you please expand:
2.Save modem drivers - where do i find them and what size we looking at, i went into Device manager/modem/properties/driver/driver file details then copied the 1 highlighted out of the 13 listed, but it only took 5 seconds, can't be right can it ?
5. go online via Help & Support - i presume after re-installing my old modem drivers this lets me connect?
Another question not quite related but i'm struggling to do a Defrag. It only moves to 1% then back to 0% all the time ?
Sorry for seeming so

Your better off downloading new drivers designed for XP as the old ones probably wont work! - but then again you probably wont need to as XP comes with loads of drivers on disc.
Dont worry about a defrag, just do one after the installation...
Its probably worth backing up your work files & email & favorites before the upgrade...

Just backing up what RJS sez....
Gone from 98 to W2K, then to XP. Bear in mind that XP is a prettied up version of 2K, I still had to update most of my drivers!!!
My advice is this -
(1) got a CD writer? if not, get one. Dirt cheap now and is by far the easiest way to back up your hard drive.
(2) back up -
Favorites
Email address book (export emails & addresses from Outlook Express) you'll end up with a .WAB file
Any documents you want
Save games for any games
Any passwords/User names (such as log-ons for ISP etc)
(3) whilst backing everything up, download the latest XP drivers for all your hardware (modem, grafix card, sound card, printer, scanner etc) If you look in the device manager, you'll see what hardware you've got (if you don't know)
(4) Save ALL of this onto a CDr
The XP install isn't that traumatic, just remember to keep XP constantly updates (normally automatic though)
Hope this helps
