Question

As some of you know, I'm a Macintosh Junkie. I've recently gone from Mac OS 9.2.2 to Mac OS 10.2.2, which is based on BSD unix.

sooo, I'm using the terminal application, am having fun rm -rf directories out of existance

Now, the one thing I'm trying to do is mount an AFP (Appletalk Filing Protocol) volume, ie; a Macintosh Accesible volume.

Ok, first thing, I need to create a node in /Volumes not a problem, just a bit of;

mkdir /Volumes/nameofnode

then I mount my desired volume

mount -t afp afp://username:Password@servername/volname /Volumes/nameofnode

cool it mounts, I can cd into it and rm -rf to my hearts content.

Problem is when I come to unmount the thing.

I try a bit of;

umount -f /Volumes/nameofnode

ok, then I'm told I need to;

rmdir /Volumes/nameofnode

but this gives a 'nameofnode not empty' error.

WTF? if I cd into nameofnode and ls -l, nada, nothing n there. hmmm

I could at /Volumes, go 'rm -rf nameofnode' which I've done. but that does seem to mess up the privs on the volume, or it could just be me.

Questions:
Why does the rmdir not work? as when I cd into and ls -l the directory it is empty?

what effect would 'rm -rf'ing the nameofnode dir actually have?

Does anyone know what I'm on about?

ahha!
when I 'ls -al' the nameofnode dir I get this:

.
.
.autodiskmounted

if I delete .autodiskmounted I can then sucessfully rmdir nameofnode.

thanks!
