Just tell it not to deteect dialtone in the DUN settings and see if it actually dials out.

I saw a problem recently where if youre using BT's answerphone service which changes the dialtone to inform you have messages, this prevent s the modem from detecting the dialtone as its different to what it's expecting.

Does he have Call Minder or some other service that changes the dialtone to be intermittent (if there's a message waiting)? If so, try unclicking the checkbox in the modem properties 'Wait for Dialtone'

Red face

Also check that you have a 56k modem cable and not a 33.6k one like I did a while back

check to see the dial properties / area is set to the UK.

I had a problem with a modem not dialing out on someones laptop, and they just set it to the first one on the list, which I believe was america!

I had a user trying to dial into their network from home with a problem recently. We checked the laptop on another line and it was fine. Turned out to be the damn Call Minder

Unhappy

I have tried all the above and it still cannot detect the dial tone.

When you try to connect you can hear the modem click and then 2 secs later it tells you the same old thing, time to bin it i reckon.

Exclamation

Personally I'd try a known working modem on it first, and work back from there if it still does it!

What OS you using?

Windows 98 SE
Internal PCI modem

If you are using both the above there is a know problem with Win98SE not waiting long enough for the dialing tone. Think its documented in one of the .txt files within the Windows directory and is on the Microsoft web site.
