The most likely format to work is DVD format, although you may have to split onto multiple discs. Otherwise VCD and SVCD are the next most compatible files albeit with quality loss.

All of the above take some time to author.

Oh, and XVCD is a good alternative as you can get good quality playback (player dependant).

If I wanted to write a DVD and play it back on a standard DVD player and watch it on my TV what is the most likely format to work ? I'm hoping this can help me decide which writer to go for, so any recommendations ?

Thanks

Ken

Chaps

Thanks for the replies. I was referring to the -R and +R differences but I have read the stuff in the links and there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the different formats.

Thanks again

Just read that link...

It sounds like "-" has been around the longest, and has the must use (currently), but "+" is catching up. Neither seem to have any advantage of the other that I can see

I have a dvd -r recoder for the pc (pioneer 104), am very happy with it and with various tweaks to the firmware have it region free / able to burn @ X2 (4.5 GB in 30 mins).

There is a new sony drive out / coming out that has + and - compatability .

But from a media point of view, I think that dvd - is cheaper

I just bought some from a place on the web for 65P each. U go into pc world and them robbing Barstewards are selling them for a fiver or so a time (different brands but still a major rip off.

The 65p ones work fine to store data on / not put many films on to dvd yet, but the few i did had no problems.

Cheers

I plumped for a Philips DVD-R. The reason is, in most current DVD players and esp the PS2, DVD-R is the only medium that will work. DVD+R = waste of money if u have a dvd player or ps2

Good choice m8. Had a 104 for about 3 months now and the only problems I have had have been media related. I use svp communications for the blanks. They start at about 47p each, but I have had good results with the traxdata and white label discs. You probably know this but films on dvdr will play on unchipped ps2's.

How easy is it to copy DVD films. What software would anyone recommend.
Ideally i'd like to pop down to my local Blockbuster, rent a dozen films, copy them including the 5.1 sound and then play them in my Sony DVP900 DVD player, without loss of quality.
How easy is it?

The simple answer is not very easy. A blank dvdr is 4.7gb. An original film can be anything up to over 8gb, and almost always over 4.7gb. This means that the film has got to be ripped down to fit onto a blank, which might just mean a loss of extras or certain features, or maybe the quality or sound have to be downsampled. Either way, it's a lengthy process. I just buy mine pre backed up lol.
P.S. the software to use to copy is either prassi or nero.

There's plenty of other places to discuss this sort of thing!
