Started Building A PC For A Friend Last Night Had Some Problems. Abit VL6 Mobo,P3-800,256 Ram, 20gb HDD, Voodoo 5500, CDRW,DVD, Sb Live,Modem.

Built It All Up Switched On Everything Worked Apart From No Detection Of HD. checked the usual and reseated everything again. Now the system works but the floppy does not. tried reseating cable in the correct way and it gets power. just when it tries to read from the floppy get not formatted disk via windows.

Its a codegen 6000p case with 300 psu

Is the floppy cable the right way round? I've had this (Panasonic floppies are reversed for some reason).

Have you built one before?

The floppy cable deosn't connect end to end. The second connector in from one end has a "twist" in it if you look closely and that is what needs to be in the back of the floppy, with the opposite end in the MB.

hmm, odd.

Sounds like the cable to floppy drive needs switching round. If memory serves correct, on hard drive (ie; IDE) then red stripe is always on right hand side when inserted to the drives, and floppies are the opposite.

is it a DMA66 drive?
have you got the drive cable the right way round, blue into motherboard
have you got the CD on the same cable, most dont like it!

as said before. most likely cable wrong way round on floppy

HDD Works Fine, As Stated & Yes Have Built pc's before.

Have Reseated The Floppy cable The Exact Same Way As Before. Will Re-check though,

The Floppy was never disconnected as it worked...But Not Now

If the floppy cable is in the wrong way round then the floppies LED stays lit, it's pretty easy to spot.

Hello,

The only thing I can remember about doing this is that some Floppy cables have a twist in the middle and some dont. This seems to make a difference and can vairy between manufacturers or the sequence?. Try a different cable type.

Also in my day IDE drives had master and slave jumpers for that have to be set correctly, New HD's used to come with the IDE set to slave (Second Drive) it this is the only HD then it will not work as there is no primary drive selected. Check you jumper settings against the manuals.

From DOS Get I/O Error When Trying To Access Floppy, Have Even Changed Cable,

Any Further Ideas

Check all the BIOS settings for IDE stuff, write down what they are set to and they try out a few other settings.

Remove the Floppy (oo errr missus) and check that you have not get a bent pin that is shorting.
Check the jumper settings on the floppy
Try another blank disk.
Is the IDE ribbon cable too long? sometimes they get funny if they are long cables with only one drive plugged in.

Try the floppy without the CD or HD, prehaps the CD or HD setting is knocking out the FD, especially if they share an IDE bus.

Go for a drive in your scooby and forget it!

Have you tried a different FDD? incase the existing one has failed. (Happened before!) Is the FDD an LS120 or 'SuperDisk', these run of the IDE bus and can be very picky.

Have you checked that the FDD has enough clearance under it for the spindle to rotate?
(Had this one myself before!)
