Question

Currently I have a Blueyonder cable modem (1mb) and I'm using a Linksys DSL Router/Hub to share the connection.

3 out of the 4 ports are being used by PC's in the same room as the cable modem. I want to set up a PC downstairs but not not run 20 metres of CAT5 cabling downstairs and unhidden over laminate flooring. While I'm at it I may as well set up a connection for a laptop as well!!!

Can I uplink a wireless hub to my exsiting router/hub?
What sort of costs are the hubs, PCI cards and PC cards?

Never really looked into wireless before, so I really don't have a clue.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

Andy,

I have a cable modem with NTL and a Netgear RT314 ADSL/Cable router.

I simply added a linksys WAP11 (802.11b Access Point) to a port on the router and I now have several other desktops/laptops connected via 802.11b via a whole range of different vendors cards (Cisco, Symbol, DLink)

You should be able to pick up a decent Access Point for around £120-150. The linksys WAP11 woudl stack nicely on your linsys router.

HTH

Cheers Michael, that's exactly what I want to hear!!

So it's just like adding an additional hub, via the uplink or any spare port.

Just need to find good (I mean cheap) prices now!

michael,

Of course, in accordance with NTLs T&Cs you've got a maximum of 3 machines connecting to the cable modem, right?

Just be very careful on security - use the highest bit rate WEP that is available to you and limit the network to the MAC addresses of your known network cards.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who don't and leave DHCP giving out IP addresses to anyone with a wireless adapter who wonders past your house....

Thanks

Gavin

Andy

We're clearing out of WAP11s @ the mo. You're welcome to one at dabs price less 10%.

Cheers

I'm going to be setting up similar when Santa makes a visit. Will be Warchalking my house, anyone who wants to walk by and browse the internet can. Camping is allowed in my front garden for a modest charge.

Cheers Lee, you're a star!

I think my girlfriend will hate me, as I'll probably swear a lot getting it working!
