Ivor Hortons, Begining Java, Wrox Press:
http://www.wrox.com/books/1861000278.htm
This book is recommended by SunEd on their Java Courses and is very good.

I also second the recommendation for Bruce Eckels thinking in Java.

As far as websites go probably one of the best apart form the tutorials/examples on java.sun.com is the java ranch.

Ignore super_si's comments above, he doesn't seem to appreciate that he's read a different book, by a different author, on a different subject

You should immediately buy Java In A Nutshell (everyone I teach gets a copy) and it will be well thumbed within a week.

Next, buy the Java Cookbook. Lots of the "recipes" are good, but it's more useful when you use it to look at a solution to something like what you're trying to do, then extrapolate your own answer. Of course, that pre-supposes that you actually want to learn how to do things, rather than just blindly copy some pre-existing solution without understanding what it actually does

Avoid Java Examples In A Nutshell. I sent it back to Amazon for a refund as it was that bad

I was referring to your associative denunciation of Java In A Nutshell having read (and disliked) Linux In A Nutshell

I had to learn Java last year mate.
I know. Some of your coursework was written by me, as I recall.

Another recommendation for the 'in a nutshell' book. I tend to refer to mine as often as the package etc pages on java.sun.com

The 'in a nutshell' book I have, IIRC, is the second edition (anyway, it's for JDK 1.3) - I'd suggest you try and get an edition for the 1.4 JDK, otherwise you'll have to check everything in the class reference guide of the book against that on the web, in case it's changed.
