My Athlon 1300 is running hotter than my charge temperatures on the Scooby!
Used to run at mid 40s, and recently started to crash a bit. Temperatures now about 60 in normal use and up to 68 with heavy CPU usage.
I have a working CPU fan from one of those overclocking companies (forget the name but it was rated fine for an Athlon 1300 and mercifully quieter than the last Superorb thing).
Taking the fan off the CPU, there was very little in the way of thermal paste so I redistributed what was hanging about and it was down to the 40s again for a few days and now it is hot again.
How much thermal paste do I stick on it and where do I get it from?

You need to cover the CPU with a 'thin' layer of paste to ensure thermal contact with the heatsink. Have a look at http://www.overclockers.co.uk and they should be able to supply some. When you come to refit the heatsink you need to ensure that it is clean.....

get rid of all old thermal paste from CPU and heatsink. polish the heatsink surface until nice and shinny.
get yourself some artic silver and follow the instructions.

Thanks, ordered some Artic Silver 3 from "The Overclocking Store".
Any hints on how to clean off all the excess stuff off the CPU - it has spread everywhere. Is an alcohol wipe any good?
