Demon Internet ADSL
#1
I currently have a SDU with Demon, and after looking around, I've decided to cancel this, as the ADSL service they offer IMHO is not worth the money compared to NTL.
I'm with NTL for the normal telephone line, and have a second line dedicated for the internet. With the NTL broadband service, I can receive a 600k line, with a ratio of 20:1, as opposed to a 512k line from BT/Demon with a ratio of 50:1. Therefore I can potentially get up to three times the speed for download. All this for a tenner a month less as well!
I only intend to use this service for browsing and not for telephone calls, etc.
When I spoke to the bloke at Demon, stating the reason why I was looking to leave he got the right hump and tried to palm me off with a load of bullsh!t which just didn't wash with me I'm afraid.

been on Demon DSL since trials ran ( business service - 2mbit .. woohoo! ). Since then back down to express and now express solo.
Service is now stable & reliable ~ occasionally get stress with the mail punts, but nothing to get excited about.
Steve
PS : Billing department are pants though.

DJ,
We have had Demon ADSL at work for almost 2 years. No real problems with the service, have about 1 outage every 6 months and a couple of minor blips, usually fixed by switching the router off and back on (maybe it was made by Microsoft!). When there is a major problem it is frustrating but they have set up an 0800 number which you can call and they will tell you if all is OK, saves having to go through to a helpdesk just to find out that there is a national problem!
Only major problem I have found is they will not set up a POP3 route. If there is an outage, we can't get our email until normal service has been resumed. However benfits far out weigh the disadvantages. Cut our Internet bill from £1500/qtr to £300.
IMHO worst part of the service is getting BT to agree a installation date, demon say 4 weeeks, but to be on the safe side add 2 weeks to that.
Cheers
PS. Trying to build a PC myself, got any spare bits? Dont need a monitor!

Dunk,
the main thing that puts me off Demon ADSL is the fact that (at least on the cheaper packages) you can't get your mail via SMTP.
If you are happy with POP (and maybe Outlook and all the fun that the viruses give you) then you should be OK.

I have had Demon for about 18 Months and the outage time this year has been so great that we are setting up out own server.
Monitor this page for a few days and see what you think
http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/status/status2.shtml
Try someone else is the best advice I could give you.
Unfortunately I dont have personal experience but I have heard that Clara and Nildram are quite good.
Good luck
Andy

I think the real problem is the ADSL network is pants.
I am in the lucky position in our office that we have a mix of internet feeds - some are being tested for the supplier including a very nice cable modem from Telewest that gives *cough* quite a few meg!!
We run a 2Meg Demon ADSL as our main feed and it has been very good. We also have a 512k USB demon feed and that is pants regulary falls over etc etc however it falls over when our other USB ADSL feed falls over i.e it is not the provider but the ADSL network that falls over.
I beleive that there are several areas of the country where BT have exceeded the 50:1 ratio and are overloading the network in an attempt to get more people connected.
