file/folder sharing win 98 and 2000
#1
Hi all,
Real odd one this.
Someone Im helping out has a win 2000 pc and a win98 pc (in a workgroup)
the win 2k machine seems to be able to see all the shares on the win 98 machine.
however the win 98 is struggling to do the same on the 2000 box.
c:\ is shared, yet you cant see anything from the win 98 machine, so I also shared c:\fred\ a folder in c: - that worked. Then I created a dir called bob, but it couldnt see bob, yet it could see fred?
what the hell is going on. It also cant see the my documents folder I shared out(which is what they really want it to).
Is this a user accounts? thing or FAT vs NTFS I dunno - any ideas?
ta

If you had NTFS on Win2k, then under Win98 you won't see that drive..not even C:\Fred, so it sounds like Win2k is FAT32, as per win98.
I have a similar problem with Win Me (FAT32) and XP (FAT32). I've tried setting up static IP's on the workgroup, installing and configuring Microsoft Networks, NetBUI e.t.c e.t.c but still cannot get Win Me to see the shared files on the other PC. I can however see all the files from the XP PC !!
I ended up dual booting the Me PC with XP...guess what..in XP both PC's can see each others files...
So it looks like there must be a problem with the way Win98 and Me network.
Any technical GURU help appreciated!

Hi ADP.
It sounds like a config problem.
You say that from your 98 pc , you can see a share on you 2000
box called fred but not Bob???
I'm not sure (have never tried) if you can share the whole of C:
2000 creates a hidden share for c: called c$, only logging in as admin can you normally see this. ie you would use.....
\\win2000pc\c$ to map a drive to it.
if you shared fred out, where fred sits on hard drive as c:\fred
thats why fred is ok
if "Bob" exists under fred, like.... c:\fred\bob
you would automatically see bob as well.
if bob is in c: drive like c:\bob
you will also have to share bob as well
cheers

I dont think I explained this too well did I?:
Ok there are 2 pcs in a workgroup.
1 is running win 98, the other runs win 2000.
Previously these 2 users were sharing files between each others pcs ok, but this was when they both had 98. They junked the one pc runnnig 98 and got a new pc with 2000.
Now, the user still on 98 cant see any of the shared folders on the 2000 computer, but - the user running 2000 can see all the stuff on the 98 pc.
Do I need to make user accounts on the 2000 pc perhaps?? for the person using the 98 pc??
thanks Andy

Sorry if I missed it, but have you turned file sharing on?
My Me machine showed it as on, but the sharing hand thingy would never appear. I had to uncheck it, recheck and then share it again before it would register.
I also used to have Me talking to 98Se, but now have Me talking to 2k. The requirement for user account logins in Me is nowhere near as stringent as it is in 2k, and that could well be why the 2k machine sees all, cos Me doesn't care, but whatever user you are logged in with on Me is not recognised on the 2k box. It should tell you that though in my experience. eg. "no resources are available" to you sort of message, or did you get that?
Don't ask theoretical questions like "well why doesn't it do xy or z" I can only tell you what I got to work, not how it should work.
I should add that the shares somtimes took a while to be recognised before they worked.

Ok thanks for the tip, I think my next thing to do is to add a user account on the 2k computer for the person trying to log on from 98 to see if it then lets the user on. If this dont work, then Ill hold my hands up and say I cant fix it. Thats gonna look pretty laim, but hey!

Check that the Win2K box has NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled:
1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
2. Right-click the network adapter that is connected to the network that the computers running Windows 95/Windows 98 are using (usually Local Area Connection), and then click Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. Click the Advanced button.
5. On the WINS tab, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK.
6 Click OK, and then click OK.
7. Right-click the network adapter that you modified in step 2, and then click Disable.
8. Right-click the network adapter that you modified in step 2, and then click Enable. This initializes the adapter with the new setting.
