Terminal Servers - what do you use?
#1
I remeber that the 2509-RJ (8 port Async) used to send a break signal to each terminal line if it was powered on. This is fine unless it's connected to Sun workstations as it causes them to stop (sun may have changed this).
Can not remember if this has been fixed or not but I know the interface modules for the 2600/3600 don't do this.

Just wondered what you lot tend to use as terminal servers?
We use 8port CISCO units, that enable us to remotely connect to our Sun systems'serial ports for console access.
Any recommendations??

For routers at remote POPs we just use 2500/2600/3600 Ciscos with async cards and the RJ45 octal cables.
I've used Chase IOLAN+ in the past (4 yrs ago?). They were very good and flexible for getting async terminals talking to a Unix host. No idea if they're still available or something better is around now.

Go for something like a Cisco 2520.... add a bit more RAM and Flash, add a 32 port Octal card like deano says.... and with the IPSEC feature set u can use to administer/access async ports SSH clients, rather than Telnet.
I have just put 3 of these in as part of a big datacentre build. Very sweet, however quite expensive compared to the Black Box option. Those Black Box devices are very iffy IMHO as we have had probems with them locking ports out and even after soft resets not allowing access. The only cure was the old power off/on....
I have the exact specs, configs etc if its any use.
The other cool thing with using Cisco devices is that for Cisco kit all you need off the octal RJ45 cable is a standard CAT5 patch cable which u can then end with a Cisco DB9 if its old stuff, Same for Sun Netra's... The only thing we had to make ends for was some 7200 routers and Sun DB25 console plugs... again have pin outs...

Yeh you get the same problem with the Black Box ones - in fact all of them.
Theres some weirdo setting the unix 'flip-floppers' will know off by heart in Sol 7 and above that sets an alernative break sequence they look for... gets round this issue very nicely
