Has anyone moved:

An NT4 server running Exchange 5.5 to another server running W2K with Exchange 5.5, but still retain the same server name?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy

To do it you need a copy of the Exchange resource kit and more specifically a program called exmerge.

exmerge allows you to export everyones mail boxes to pst files and then re import them on the new server.

First do a user export from the first server and dump that onto the second server.

then use exmerge to restore the mailboxes onto the new server.

Sorry I wasn't very clear:

Old server: NT4 & Exchange 5.5
New server: Windows 2000 & Exchange 5.5

Two different servers physically, but we want to retain the same computer name to save messing about with clients.

Thanks Willie! Thanks for the Link Chris, I'll read it tomorrow. Ian you know my mail address!

Cheers
Andy

Question

Still in the planning stage.

I found this resource which was quite useful. http://www.exchangeadmin.com/

Would you guys advise just doing a hardware migration (Same set up different hardware) and then at a later date move everything to 2000

Or would you say change everything to 2000 now (although we have an NT Domain, most of the servers are currently on NT4) ?

Cheers

move exverything now to w2k, though the domain can stay at NT4..

Why hasnt anybody thought about the following for the migration.

do a full complete backup of the ex55 server via correct agents

rebuild server as w2k with same name/domain
reinstall ex55 with the same org name, site names, service accounts ensure physical drives (letters) are the same as was on the nt4 box.
restore the dbs from the last ex55 backup
run an isinteg to sync the dbs

this brings back the ex55 as it was but retains single instance, doing pst migrations breaks single instance and may dramtically increase the IS size..

Done this before with no probs

However some pre-reqs are required, like is this a standalon ex55 server or part of a whole org of them ? Are there any extra components on the server - like Key Management, Fax addons, AV addons etc etc

There's no need to keep the same name, although server names can be changed with W2K. We've found the simplest method is as follows

Install the W2K server, Exchange 5.5 in same organisation, migrate the mailboxes (after a completed & verified full backup)& leave the old NT4/5.5 server on the network.

As users log in, as long as the old email server is still running they get automatically re-directed to the new server where their mailbox now lives. Once they have all logged in, say after a week or 2, remove the NT4 server. Anybody who's not logged in during that period will have to be re-configured, but it's not usually a major issue.

Give WillieF a shout - he knows all about that!

willie@ecs-uk.net

We decided not to do the change to W2K in the end, rather just stay with a new machine with NT4. However, migration of the name problems should be the same.
