As DJ Dunk already said, you can extract and browse the ISO image using ISOBuster (it's very good).
Likewise, you can burn it directly onto CD with any CD-Writer software. I personally use Ahead Nero.
Just downloaded and burnt Mandrake Linux ISO images last night.

I use a version of Nero here and it has an "Extract image" option on one of the menus which opens a browse window to allow you to select the .iso that you want to extract and burn

nero burning rom it is spot on imho
when you wrote it to cd did you just copy the .iso to cd or extract it and create a new image from it.
the best thing you can do is download nero from kazaa and use that
