How can I access my home PC from Work???
#1
I've got Win XP Pro on my PC at home and I've been trying to set it up so that I can access it from work.
Does anybody know how this can be done / where I can find out more information.
Cheers

Is that functionality a part of WinXP Pro ? Only prob I can see is that it will need to be part of the work network to be able to get on and administer it. Or will it ?

suba,
Thanks for that, but this is what I'm having problems with - don't know how to set it up - read all the help notes but still can't seem to understand it.
Anybody have any easy guides.....

Does your work have a VPN (Virtula Private Network)?
I use that here. It establishes a secure network connection from my home to the works network. I can then use VNC or some other remote control software.

I use no-ip.org to look after the dynamic IP addressing, and then use VNC to connect onto it.
Very good. I also use a firewall on my PC to stop un-authorised access.

I use Remote Administrator 2.
Lower overhead than pcanywhere. I have work > home and home > work set up for maximum flexibility.

I use PC Anywhere 10.5 on the computers, and DNS2Go to update the IP address. Both very simple to setup and can easily work through firewalls.

Use VNC, it's lightweight, cross platform and free and you don't need clever client software - just a Java capable browser!
If you're firewalled at work change the default port VNC runs on to 80 and you should be able to sail past any firewalls that are on your works network.
At your personal PC make sure that you've got some authentication on the VNC server - otherwise anyone can get in.
Use a personal firewall (Sygate is good and free, or use the crap one built into XP) on your PC and only allow connections into your PC on port 80 from the IP address/subnet of your work. You can find this out by visiting www.grc.com and running their simples "Shields Up" test - it will tell you what IP Address you are coming from.
Edited to compliment Burr on his cornering technique - squeezed past on the inside!

Noodle - before you go and set something up make sure you won't get into trouble - I don't know who you work for, but some businesses will frown upon this sort of thing - for example, I would get sacked if I did this....
I'm sure you've thought about that.
