had similair problems at home and cured it by the simple method of buying a new modem.
some of these modems packaged with computers are complete ****e and not made to last
the one i bought was the cheapest i could find from pc world they have a non branded components section and it cost about 12 quid
ok its not the fastest modem but it hangs on for grim death once youve got a connection (not good when the misses forgets to log off properly and i come home to find it still mind you i hadnt paid extra for the calls).
just a thought anyway

does the modem make any noise (high pitch modulation) when trying to dial out. Is modem internal or external?. If internal open PC lid locate modem pull out of slot & then relocate in differnet slot if ya gotta spare slot.

mine is doing exactly the same at the moment. Seems to connect to the net ok (username & password verified) but cannlo load any pages as it does not connect.
Someone has suggested a new load of Windows 98 to see if that cures it... good or bad?

Ok another to do this will confirm that the modem/setting are working fine on the PC open a command prompt Start Run type CMD now type ping 127.0.0.1 this is the loopback address if you get 4X replys then system is ok. If you get timed out then system not ok.

I was on UKonline but that wouldn't load anything modem actually loaded and connected but then couldn't load any website including my home one when I shut it down it asked if I wanted to disconnect the modem so that bit was working seems weird to me

OK can you go to My Network Places on ya desktop Right click & Properties. Right click on your Dial up icon & choose properties now highlight TCP/IP & click on properties. What is the IP address or is it obtain automatically??.

OK not sure if this next bit will work as its a while since I have supported 95 but try opening a command prompt & then type winipcfg. The idea is this will hopefully list a number of IP parameters take a copy & email it me. If this fails then will need to have a think.

OK were not making a great deal of progress so far we know
1)We have a dialing tone
2)Your OS IS working.
3)The PC will communicate with the Modem
4)We will assume that the ISP issues your IP.
The next unknown is the cable form the PC to the BT socket. Do you have another? Can you ensure it is firmly connected both ends.
I do not belive that this is a config issue or hardware but that is just gut feel.
