So I go on net and after a minute or two modem disconnects and I have to redial only for same thing to happen. Doesn't always do this so intermittent problem. No obvious answers like someone picking up the phone. Any suggestions as to why? Thanks David

Question

Do you have Outlook running in the background ? This can often disconnect you on a 56k modem as it tries to dialup. If so, check your connection settings in Outlook to make sure it will look for mail on the existing connection if there is one (can't remember the exact setting )

Thanks guys. And it bloody well cut out as I was about to write this reply!! I have a 56k modem and do have Outlook in background. It does seem to dial up OK (sometimes takes a few goes) but then sometimes cuts out after say a minute whilst I am browsing. This never used to happen and I wondered if the modem might be at fault. I have recently got fed up with pop-up ads interrupting my surfing and have tried to delete what I think were some of the files that caused these pop ups and I wondered if I didn’t complete this task properly and this may be causing the problem? As you can tell I am not a PC buff but all suggestions appreciated. David

Edited to answer modem question which is external SupraExpress 336e V + Int Plug and Play - if that means anything?

Try closing Outlook and just use Internet Exploerer to eliminate that possibility

Which Motherboard do you have and are you using USB? I had the same with mine and it was the Via chip. You need a PCi card with a Lucent or Opti chip if that is any help.

Whats the model number David ? ( SUP****) Then we can look for updated drivers.

Clutching at straws - Have you tried dialing another number, such as a mobile etc, leaving it connected for a while to see if its an ISP problem ? Pick a cheap number though

Thanks I will see if I can find model number. I don't think it's the ISP as I have tried connecting thro' another ISP and same problem occurs. You don't think it could just be a duff modem? (I don't have a spare to play with tho). I think I am going to have to get someone in to sort out PC generally as it's soooooo slow these days gummed up with programmes and I don't know which are essential and which are just in the way. I have the same problem. As soon as the guy that lives upstairs got ISDN installed, (I have 56k modem, and his box is next to mine), I copped what you are copping. It was perfect before this. I thought it may have been my modem starting to say bye bye, however I recently bought a laptop and it does the same thing when I connect to my same line. Next step is to ring the phone company and have the line "cleaned". The phone chaps may have done something to my line while they were doing the changes to his line, seeing my box is next to the guy from upstairs.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Just a wild stab in the dark - do you have Call Waiting installed on your phone line? If you do, it could cause problems with your modem if somebody is trying to call you when you are online.

This is still bugging me. How many phones have you got connected to the line in your house in total ?

You should have a REN of less than 4 or 5 depending on your supplier. Too many phones use to cause my modem to drop all the time

I have two lines into the house and one which I use for modem, fax machine and terminal for credit cards so I think I am under REN limit and don't have call waiting. The annoying thing is this never used to happen with the same set up and nothing has changed, I did see BT working in the area but can't think that could be linked. In fact once connected the modem seems pretty secure as if I try to use fax or card terminal I get a line busy signal but the modem stays connected. I still wonder if some cookie is trying to intervene and access a web site which upsets things - but I know little about PCs so if I am talking rubbish on this please feel free to tell me!! Incidentally I have been typing this on line and all is fine for now!!! D
