BT OpenWorld and ADSL routers
#1
Can somone on here please confirm if its possible to disconnect the BT supplied Alcatel ADSL USB modem and connect an ADSL router to our hub instead ?
Tried to do this today with no luck whatsoever - the router's WAN light simply refused to light up at all.

PS: We're using the BT OpenWorld Home 500 package.

Yep .. certainly is.
You may need to get into the adsl router to set the configs ( passwords, VPI / VCI numbers etc ) - usually they have a web interface to do this..

It's possible. As previous post said you'll need to setup login info etc.
One proviso though, while it is possible to replace the USB modem with A router it is NOT possible to replace it with ANY router.
What router you using?

just dealt with this myself. The broadband router HAS to have an adsl modem built in. Else you have to buy one (£80 for a Samsung one which is ethernet). It took some finding! They were all PCI or USB.
Bought a router/hub-in-one then found out it didnt have adsl modem - once it was delivered!! Some do have them built in tho!

Silent Monkey, I'll confirm the model for you but it was definitely a Zylex router that could be connected directly into the BT adsl socket, so I guess it had some kinda modem in it.
We could communicate with the routers firmware, but the WAN light wouldn't illuminate at all. Its comforting to know other people HAVE done this.
Also it would be good to get the wires only install so we're not contravening the BT T&C's
I'm going to ring up now and ask how much their basic package is and how much to add 3 static IP addresses to it.

Zylex Prestige, 1x LAN 1xWAN
We used a very experienced guy to configure the router, but got no joy whatsoever. I was wondering if there's any circumstances where BT could pull a few tricks at their end to make sure their BT Broadband Home User product ONLY works with the ADSL modem plugged into PC's USB port, opposed to our ADSL router plugged into the hub ?

There are a few Zyxel Prestige routers, which model have you got? I know of people using the 643 (4 port) and the 642R (1 port) on BT Openworld with no problems.
I don't see how BT could detect it, after all they are still talking to a modem. I, like many others, have been using a router (with built in modem) on the Home 500 package for a long time now.
Also since the introduction of the wires only service you are not restricted to a USB modem.
