Hi,

I am trying to put the twisted pair cables into a cat5 socket, but I only have a plastic insertion tool - doesn't seem to be doing it very well.

Is it me or is the tool crap? Do I need a metal one?

The wires just don't seem to be getting pushed home very well.

buy a krone insertion tool... they are cheap and make it a lot easier...

(assuming they are krone style...)

If you can't get hold of a Krone tool you can get away with the back of a Stanley knife then run the blade across the wires to remove the excess. Not really Cat5 compliant but it works perfectly.

The placcy ones are OK if used for one or two sockets then thrown away.

I use the Krone IDC tool (same as BT guys use). Brilliant providing you remember to hold it the right way round (otherwise it trims the cables about 2mm too short)
