Can anyone help, i have a virus on my home pc that cannot be cleaned off... i have tried all the major antivirus companies and a couple of them can locate the virus but none of them can actually disinfect it.
Its been a long time since i have formatted a computer and cant remember where to start, can anyone give me a step by step run-through on how to format the computer ( windows ME) that i can print off and use....

Many thanks for any help....

Rob

Cant believe how many programs i dont have set up files for!!!!

If you really do want to format the disk (big step for a newbie), then create a boot floppy, reboot using that and type "format c:" It's unlikely but if the operating system is installed on a different drive than c: then you will need to format that drive. Not sure about ME but XP allows you to format the drive during the installation.

I actually work on virus software so I would be interested to hear what it was that's done the damage?

Its the loveletter virus (VB.LOVELETTER)
It is in file _RESTORE/ARCHIVE/FS502.CAB
I tried norton a/v 2002 and it couldnt find the virus until i scanned the actual file and it found it (i used pc pitstop.com and this is how i found the virus at first) panda and solo couldnt find it at all...
Norton could not quarantine or delete the virus/file

McAfee found the file straight away and told me that the virus was disinfected and the file deleted, i then performed another scan and it was back inthe same file/ same place....

I then performed another virus clean and now when i do a virus scan it no longer comes up with a virus.. BUT... whilst watching the v/scan it no longer scans my restore files whereas it used to spend about 1 min in the restore files???

So, the problem i have now is that my pc is getting slower and slower and i cannot open more than two applications at one time now, my pc is P4 2gig processor 510mb ram, and has never had a problem with multipal operations..

i am getting the blue screen of death a lot as well!!!

H E L P !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Rob

McAfee recommend booting to DOS and running a command line scanner to remove the loveletter virus - see here. There's also a link on there to special ME removal considerations that you need to checkout.

CREATE the boot disk on ANOTHER PC, NOT your infected one! Then follow the virus removal instructions.
