Have recently built a new machine but keep getting various errors. The latest problem is when installing a Creative PCI128 sound card (couldn't get the on-board sound to work) the only sound i get from the speakers is a screaching type sound. When it boots up i get the normal windows start-up sound but when i try and play it again (control panel/sounds) i get the screaching sound.Have re-installed software several times. The most common error message i get is "Fatal exception OD has occurred at 0028:00000038".Is this a memory address or something? Also when installing the creative drivers it reports that the uninstaller has failed to initialise.Apart from this sometimes the machine boots up ok and sometimes it doesn't!
Can anyone help?
The spec is Duron 800mhz processor,FicAZ31 m/b,256mbSDRAM,two hard drives(20GB+3.5GB),windows98SE

have you got all the correct drivers? have a look at your motherboard website and download drivers there.
have you got a mic? mute the mic.
goto control panel/multimedia and have a look at what sound device is selected.

I've turned off the onboard sound via the bios.I've also tried my Creative 5.1 live card in it from my main machine and that's fine!I've had problems/fatal errors, etc.when installing windows, modem, video and now sound and was wondering if there's something major i'm missing. The fact that say 50% of the time it's the same fatal exception at 0028:00000038 is that significant?
Thanks for any replies

I've had problems with onboard sound & seperate sound cards before. I read somewhere it's better to leave the onboard enabled in the bios and then disable it under windows. That way at least windows is aware of it and can exclude it properly.

might be a stupid question (coz it happened to me!), is the speakers powered-type? when using my old ISA AWE32 sound card, i can use a non-powered speakers and it was OK. then when i moved to a new motherboard with on-board sound, the speakers doesn't work no more. only found out that the on-board sound need powered speakers!
