GTA3 for PC - runs like a dog !
#1
For some reason, GTA3 runs really slow on my PC (P3, 800Mhz, 128 ram, ATI Xpert2000 32mb graphics card) ... any ideas ? have set the resolution to the lowest (640) ...

Same here - even on 640x480 in 16bit.
P4 1.3Ghz
128mb RDRAM
GeForce2 MX 32mb
WinXP Pro / Win2000 Pro / WinNT4 SP6a
Not the most powerful beast in the world but would have expected at least 20fps!

It's a dog on mine too
P4 1.7 Ghz 32Mb Geforce 512Mb ram. XP Pro
Was getting about 3 frames a second until I turned of "trails" in the video options, now it feels more like 15-20 fps at 800x600, still not good enough though.

runs fine on mine to duron 800 hehe but packs a punch with a gf2 GTS gfx card, as said before lots of tweaking needed to make it run respectably.
Jack I disagree on the upgrade front u can get a kickass mobo/cpu/cooler bundle for less then £300, that will blow xbox, ps2 into the weeds. Plus of course u can do so much more with a PC

I too had a massive problem despite having a powerful system and despite defragging and tweaking etc
XP 1700 cpu
GF3 video card
256 ddr ram
win2k
In fact my m8 who has a less powerful system was running much smoother
At one point the cut scenes were jerky that the speech was broken.
Reinstalled the game to solve that problem but just driving/running around was still jerky to hell.
Looked like 5-15 fps, and the game was almost unplayable
Unrelated I completely reformatted my hard drive and wiped everthing, reinstalling latest drivers
Game now is miles better. Gets a bit slow when busy, but now at least its playable and doesnt give me headache/eyeache.
Not sure if it was reformatting the hard drive what fixed it or whether it was new motherboard drivers/video drivers

1. Tried 'bloody NOCD' and fixed exe's. NOCD exe works best.
2. Copied all CD audio onto HDD, eliminates any CD pauses.
3. Defrag.
4. Vid driver testing, testing WHQL 29.42 XP dets tonight.
5. Directx9.1 beta seems to help a little.
6. Smoothing app to test.
7. Moved the soundcard from 1 pci slot to another. Had sound lockups to.
8. Using Win2kproSP2, Tried it in win98se also, no difference.
9. Using OpenGL for now.
In game: trails, vsync, and frame limiter off. Played with viewing distance.
So atm it runs perfectly @ 800X600 16bit full detail. But still a bit jumpy when the action gets frantic.
However I run most games @ at least 1024X768, so still not happy.
Enough detail Father?
