I read free for the first year. Does that mean free for those Win7/8 users that upgrade in that year or after 1 year of use you then start paying? As the move is trying to break the Chinese market due to the extremely high percentage of piracy, it can't be the latter.

It's free for first year as meaning anyone who chooses to upgrade in the first year can do so for free. Win 10 judging by the online articles I've read looks okay, they have attempted to change the interface to be more "Windows-like" than Windows 8 was while incorporating the apps and easy switch between desktop, laptop, tablet and phone appeal that they attempted with Windows 8.
I for one am looking to upgrade however in the first year of all new Windows operating systems, not all software packages will support it, you may come across some of your favourite things like working with it for the first 6-12months

i personally won't be touching it as I didn't with 8 & 8.1 mainly because the robot programming software I use on the one laptop is only supported by Siemens on windows 7 and as it costs me (my company) £3000 per quarter for licensing and support I will be sticking with what works.
Changing an operating system has many more knock on effects with all 3rd party software and hardware, the releases are never ready even from Microsoft for months after initial release.
I will be waiting until I am driven by Siemens support to change.

I've been using the pro technical preview version for a few months now and it is pretty good. It's a lot easier to use than Windows 8.x and more Windows 7-esque whilst still being a step forward in technological advancement and usability. It being free is a good bonus too so will be upgrading when the time comes.

When it is officially released then yes it is free to any Windows 7 and 8.x users if they upgrade within 1 year of the Windows 10 release date.
I'm running the latest version of the technical preview in a virtual machine and like it. It's a much nicer looking version of 8.1 with many more bells and whistles.
Windows 7 has already had it's official end of life on 13/01/2015 although it's extended support runs to 2020 which is really the important date in terms of getting security updates/patches for discovered vulnerabilities.

The former is the important date if you're a gamer though. No DX12 for Windows 7.

At some point Microsoft will be heading towards a OS setup like they do with Office365:
.....Subscription.
Think we're safe with win10...for now
Win8.1 upgrade...do it do it do it!!! Obviously when its fully released and allow a few months for any major bugs/f**k ups to get get patched.
Win 7 upgrade? Hmmm tough one.
Also check recommended machine specs ....NOT minimum. Lots of fools installed Vista on inferior computers and were left with very slow computers...Vista's fine with 4gig on a Quad core and SSD. I pity the fool who installs it on a single core Celeron with and complains about it being slow
This is highly important to those who may have purchased a Pseudo-laptop....by that I mean a PC that looks like a laptop, but actually has a net-top/tablet processor (Intel Atom etc).

The Free upgrade from win7 (including Pro) is time limited (6 months or something similar).
From a gamers perspective Win10 looks very good over Win7 due to the performance increase (when written in to games).
