I had one was ok but it was only 720p and no USB port to plug a hard drive in. Their are cheaper ways of doing it as all the apple TV will be using is XBMC. Just go on eBay and search XBMC and there are loads of alternatives much cheaper.

I have a Apple TV but as it's the latest version it can't be jail broken, I had looked into buying the older version but I have decided to get a brand new android TV device with Xbmc already installed from a "gadget guy" on FB... PM me if you want details fella.

I have had two Apple TV's. A first gen, which was jailbroken and is running XBMC plus I've replaced the WiFi card with 1080p accelerator card, so it can handle 1080p content and it seems pretty good.
I also have a 3rd Gen Apple TV, which as others have mentioned, cannot be jailbroken.
I'll admit for the longest time it just sat there and did not do much. When I dropped our cable TV subscription I switched to using Netflix, and combined with Unblock-us, it allows me to watch whatever region I want.
In addition to this I'm using PlexConnect (https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/for...v-plexconnect/). Short version is this: I have Plex Media Server and the PlexConnect script running on my iMac.
I have media on an external drive connected to my iMac and that's added to Plex Media Server. Plex connect is setup to take over the iMovie Theatre item on the Apple TV (default is the Trailers app, but I wanted to retain that functionality) and thus allows me view my media on my apple TV.
I didn't want to use iTunes (add to media library, and where required convert the format to m4p / mp4 format) for a couple of reasons, the main two being the conversion of non compatible formats, the second being that I may want to view the media on a platform that cannot communicate to iTunes.
As Plex allows you to add channels for various things you may also be able to view things like iPlayer through it, but I've not tried that so cannot say for sure.
