Why does my computer switch itself on in the middle of the night?
#1
eh? Thing is I got the new PC just over a week or so ago, it seemed to do it from day one. However, this PC I discovered was the wrong one, so they swapped it over. The new one does it also. Could it be that it is trying to register itself or something?

It is probably a program automatically set to update as a certain time of day.
Install the freebie ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com) firewall - good program to run anyway - it will pop up a box and tell you what program is trying to connect.
As to why it shuts down by itself, I have no idea.

Could be the new "microsoft" virus...
...In the middle of the night, the computer boots up, connects to the internet and transfers the contents of your bank account to microsoft to save time in the long run.

All joking aside...
1) You may have a ghost
2) You may have a devious child with an internet obsession
3) You may have left your computer on standby and have a piece of software that autoconnects to the internet for something. Check your startup folder and remove stuff you don't need. Check your windows task scheduling and remove stuff you don't need.

DazV,
You may have something there.
Here's another question for you. My computer plays DVD's. It also has a CDR. Is it possible to record the stereo audio part of a DVD onto a CDR? I would just like to record some of the concerts that I have on DVD on to CD's so I can play them in the car.
