eh? Thing is I got the new PC just over a week or so ago, it seemed to do it from day one. However, this PC I discovered was the wrong one, so they swapped it over. The new one does it also. Could it be that it is trying to register itself or something?

It is probably a program automatically set to update as a certain time of day.

Install the freebie ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com) firewall - good program to run anyway - it will pop up a box and tell you what program is trying to connect.

As to why it shuts down by itself, I have no idea.

Why does my new computer switch itself on in the middle of the night or day and connect itself to the internet?

Sounds like that new 'poltergeist' virus.

Could be the new "microsoft" virus...

...In the middle of the night, the computer boots up, connects to the internet and transfers the contents of your bank account to microsoft to save time in the long run.

All joking aside...

1) You may have a ghost
2) You may have a devious child with an internet obsession
3) You may have left your computer on standby and have a piece of software that autoconnects to the internet for something. Check your startup folder and remove stuff you don't need. Check your windows task scheduling and remove stuff you don't need.

DazV,
You may have something there.

Here's another question for you. My computer plays DVD's. It also has a CDR. Is it possible to record the stereo audio part of a DVD onto a CDR? I would just like to record some of the concerts that I have on DVD on to CD's so I can play them in the car.

Yes, have a look thru the forum this week and you'll see a subject on such issues, along with the piece of software you need to do such a thing.

Chaz - you do have a firewall installed don't you?!?!?

Check the logs and see where your PC is trying to connect to!

Do you have a modem connected Chaz? I've seen PCs wake up for no reason because the modem sees an incoming call and is set to wake up the PC to answer.

My last PC did that.

It turns out, as ChrisB said to be a Wake on call setting in the BIOS. There's usually a wake on LAN one too if your PC is connected to broadband/a network.

Last few Dells we had delivered were setup to switch on at midnight via BIOS settings. Threw me for a while.
