Not really, that's not a lot by modern standards. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes up all the RAM in order to perform the scan.

probably hard disk throughput, when your computer locks like that its normally memory or Hdisk.
uninstall it for now, install Panda Free or Avast try them 2, then go to technical support

Hdisk then.
Do what they say Uninstall and then re-install, if its still bad, Uninstall it, and just try another vendor as I advised, report back on full scans.
if your on 64bit 7 then add some more memory, only 32bit was bottle neck at 4gb ram, 64bit will go higher. I hazard a guess for your laptop it would be about 40 quid.
but before we go that route just try what ive said and let me know
My dad has a dell Celeron duo with 7 and 2gb ram and its awfully slow on booting maybe 10 mins before you can work on it
