Unhappy

Any one run this combination?

There is a CM addict in our house (not me!), and he's getting frustrated after I changed from W98.

CM seems to use 99% CPU time all the time, even when its just sitting doing nothing. It gradually consumes memory and after 30 mins or so of playing, goes all pear shaped - stops responding, resets PC by itself etc etc

I've tried the compatibility fixes for XP (so that it pretends to be W95 or W98 - tried both), but they make no difference

Any ideas?

Im gonna try it later but if you need to free up memory look on shareware sites for a program that frees up memory automatically when it reaches low or set amount.

Are there any game updates available on CM3.com? Might help, though with some updates you lose old save games.

Are you running cham man that was re-installed after the upgrade or did you install xp over win98?

The only reason i ask is i am playing the game on xp, with about 10 other leagues running in background and its flying through...

might be an idea to copy your save game to desktop and try re-installing it on xp, as i've not encountered any of the probs you have.

I know of at least 4 others playing it on xp and none of them have reported probs either, perhaps if cham man makes registry changes etc and you have installed over 98 this is why its not working to well, rather than installing it fresh onto xp.

If you want to try it let me know and ill tell you the save game file to save (although thinking about it, am not sure if the main game db will have been altered for transfers etc), am fairly sure the save game just applies amendments (like transfers etc) to the normal game database, dont quote me on that tho.

Thanks all - the power of Scoobynet

Mark - thanks for the reference to CM3.COM - it has a useful bulletin board that shows that CM3 and XP don't seem to go that well together for quite a lot of people. Also, we are unpatched at the moment. May get the 18 MB patch ...bit slow on dial up tho! Lots to read...

Pete - clean XP install on brand new 80GB drive - on AMD XP 1900+, 512MB PC2100DDR, Radeon 8500LE 64MB graphics card (latest drivers)

Loon - we never had the problem with W98

One question please - can someone have a look at Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt_Del in XP) whilst (only) CM3 is running. Is it consuming 99% CPU time all the time - even when waiting for user input? Maybe its coded to loop tightly checking for user input, but I'd expect the Sytem Idle Process to take up 99% CPU time when CM3 is doing nothing.

TIA

Martin

BTTT - for a final try.

Have installed the latest patch - seems more reliable now.

Still got the strange 99% CPU utilisation reported against CM even though it is idle - maybe it's not actually using the processor power even though it's reported that it is. After all, when the whole machine's doing nothing, the System Idle Process gets a reported 99% utilsation - but its not actually doing anything (useful) at all - just waiting for interrupts or something like that.

Thoughts?

Pete

Thanks for that - I think I'll go worry about something else now

...like signing up to BT ADSL. Availability checker has said "its coming soon" for a few months, our exchange is in the May 2002 list, tonight the availability checker says "Congratulations...available now etc etc". So I go to order; get to page 3 and it says "Your exchange is not suitable for ADSL, but may be in the future". Grrrrrr........Freeserve calling
