Default Accidental damage? HELP

Where do i stand?
Driving through local village today a stone flew out from a lawnmower causing a large(50p size) dent in my pass door and took paint off I stopped as I heard it got out looked backed up a couple of doors and the bloke apologised but basically said it was an accident what do you expect me to do about it, my response was well paying would be a nice gesture but obviously I was livid so when he shrugged n said I'm sorry but its one of those things I drove away before we fell out, but I am now wondering where I stand with this would his home insurance cover etc or is just u hope there a decent person and pay for it I appreciate its a 13 year old car it's not perfect but it is very good for its age and my pride n joy and it sticks out like a sorr thimb.any advise cheers
