pressure washing
hi,i was wondering if it is safe to pressure wash under the bonnet,im assuming people do this??
engines do tend to get dirty quickly and i cant see any other way to get all of it clean other than pressure washing it.
any tips for this or is it something you shouldnt do?im worried about all the electrics etc etc.

In all honest you will get a safer , possibly cleaner and more rewarding finish if you get a can of gunk, loads of rags and a toothbrush and do yourself. Few tunes and it's therapeutic.

I personally do not use one under the bonnet. If you get a decent cleaner, eg Gunk, APC diluted 1:4,G101 or the like and sprayiberally, followed by some agitation with a selection of brushes, you'll see great results in no time. Try a water spray or watering can to remove the filth. A really dirty engine might need a few applications. Cover the alternator and alarm sounder before applying water.If you opt for using a pw, cover the intercooler as the pressure can damage the vanes. Don't be tempted to use WD40 once its clean to dress the plastics. It attracts dust and grime.

Been doing Impreza engine bay cleans for years.
Use a good quality mpc or a can of gunk. Some old paint brushes and hot water. Go steady with the hot water and ensure you don't blast any electrical areas with it directly. Save yourself the worry and cover anything up with tin foil if you wish. You can use the foil for a hat afterwards when your partner finds you lovingly cleaning your engine bay.
Rinse with a hose stream not a full pressure wash. Be brief with it as well. Then close the bonnet down and start the car. Get it warmed up and leave the bonnet on the latch. The Impreza engine will quickly warm up and begin producing steam from the bonnet. Don't panic! After about 5 minutes open it up. Take a 4:1 dilution of Meguiars Hyper dressing and finely mist all over covering plastics an black parts also. Shut bonnet and leave engine another 5 mins. Turn off engine and walk away. Important: Do not worry about streaky appearance of the hyper dressing. When it dries you will be left with a smart looking engine bay only requiring a quick wipe down to take any excess greasy appearance away. Sorted.
