I use Autoglym glass polish about once a month, the rest of the time its just a shamie, warm water with some fairy liquid and then a rub with an old news paper.

Try using a clay bar on the windows first, give them a good going over as there might be some sort of containment on them that your just rubbing in hence the smearing.

are you using a dry micro fibre cloth to remove excess mate?

You can try vinegar, or as suggested, undiluted screenwash on a microfibre.
Wipe dry with another dry microfibre.
What dressing do you use on your dash?
Once its clean, I find Fast glass with a microfibre once a month or so, keeps it clean
