My failing belt and pulleys
Thought I'd post up a few pictures of my recently replaced timing belt and pulleys, the small pulley was grinding like a biatch and all but 1 of the others sounded like roller skates, the belt was beginning to melt due to the heat from the small pulley.
Should serve as an eye opener for a few people!

Very lucky, I'd only had the car less than a week and heard what sounded like a worn alternator so wasn't too put off. The car has a full Subaru dealer service history with cambelt documented at 30K (now on 54K) so didn't really think it would be belt related. Just goes to show those stamps don't mean everything.
Its such an easy thing to check and I know in future I'll check any Impreza before I buy.

I used ICP purely because they are 10 mins away and its about £5 cheaper over the counter, although I probably spent that in fuel going there!?!? Nice to be able to get the things I need on the day tho.

Might depend on year but mine has a coolant tank at the RH side of the radiator, remove that for better access, just pull the hose out of the tank.
3 or 4 bolts 10mm secure the RH cam cover, remove these and the cover will slide off.
Start the car with it off or shine a torch in and you might see something, if you do find anything in there check the condition of the belt too just in case.

Saved even more wedge doing it myself although there were a few local experts who were only going to charge around £100 in labour but £100 is better in my pocket. Plus I got to learn more about the car and be more comfortable with this sort of job.

The belt guide did have some rubber on the underside but was well clear of the belt, I checked that as I was informed of that issue by Drew. The small idler was very hot to touch when I first started looking for the problem and had a fair amount of rubber stuck to it. Either way, all the guides are set correctly now and its purring nicely.
