Hi all. I have a P1 currently running just over 400bhp. This has just been done with a few bolt on parts. I am still on the original gearbox and engine internals etc. The car has been running fine like this for over 3 years but is starting make some interesting noises so expecting the worst I am thinking of upgrading.

Does anyone know a rough estimate on price (I can do a lot of the work myself) and what parts I will need to make a reliable (as reliable as it can be) 550-600bhp. I am just wondering if is worth doing or looking after the car how it is.
I already have a front mount, equal length headers, 3in exhaust, oil cooler

I guess for starters I will need

Gearbox (preferably a 6 speed) , clutch and diff
ECU
Engine internals

either a 2.1 stroker or a 2.35 stroker. 2.35 will be the stronger of the two. if you can get the 2.35 sleeved even better. for reliability i would convert to a 14mm ARP head studs. bigger injectors. gonna need 1000cc minimum if you are looking at 600 genuine horsepower. better spark, more fuel, massive turbo (rotated setup probably with external wastegate), better brakes, better suspension, competition engine and gearbox mountings, full 6 speed drive train including hubs and shafts.

then to get the full potential out of the engine you are going to need some serious head work with fancy cams and then a decent ecu to get it all setup.

basically sell on your 400hp engine and start again. if you want a genuine "reliable" 600hp in a classic you're going to have to dig very deep.

 

It might sound a bit daft but reliable and 500+ dont really go hand in hand unless your spending 10k+

2.1 cosworth stroker or 2.35 is the most reliable set up but it doenst come cheap

No change out of 10k plus for a reliable 500-600 bhp and 600 bhp is well beyond 10k.

Sell the car and buy one already built, will save you a boat load of time and money

 

IMO if you "only" have £15k to spend I wouldn't bother.

you should get yourself a strong 500-550 bhp for 15k picking things up from other members will help like rotated set up ect

 

£15k doesn't come close to building a reliable 500+ car. I have just done this and picked up quite a few bargains and 2nd hand gear along the way. £15k, a few favours and a lot of luck might just get you 500 but I would budget for half that figure again.

But if you can run a standard P1 engine and box at over 400 for more than 3 years you obviously have better luck than I do!

heads (newage acvs) 500bhp is prob the max you can go to on standard heads 700?
6 speed non dccd 1300 - 1800
6 speed dccd 2300
suspension 600
gt30 / 35 1800
rotated setup > 900

aftermarket ecu 500 - 2000

it mounts up like im running 440 on an 03 sti and have spent a small fortune

List goes on and if you can't do any of this your self then factor in some lobour costs too.

is that just the box? it can't be hubs and shafts in that price surely?

well **** me, the ar$e has dropped out of the price of 6 speeds then. i suppose i bought mine 6 years ago, but i thought they held their prices pretty well. i suppose the dccd boxes are favoured now and can command higher prices.

 

yeah thats a really good deal rob is doing

wouldnt mind getting my hands on a dccd though

Just to further clarify my initial statement, as some are concentrating on the initial delivery of the initial goal.....

Can you afford to carry on with another wedge of cash if the engine (or major drivetrain part) goes bye bye?

If you can't, don't do it.

Going to this level of power without having a back-up stash incase things go **** up is foolish imo. This is one area that many many people don't appreciate and ultimately get burnt with.

 

If you just want a tad more power why don't you stick in a newage STI engine like a 04/05 low mileage with avcs and run 430-440

Run that for a while see how you feel

I've run mine for sometime now and really enjoyed it and now for me it's time to upgrade
