Default 313bhp on the rollers today... what next?

Went along to my first RR day today at PD Tuning up in the north east and the car achieved 313bhp with 300lb/ft torque.

The cars a '97 WRX with a rebuilt fully forged 2ltr with the following spec:

Standard VF22 Turbo
3" turbo back exhaust (decat)
Ported headers and matched uppipe
FMIC and induction kit
550cc Injectors, walbro pump and FPR
Apex'i ECU Mapped by Bob Rawle

To be honest I was hoping for higher numbers (330-340bhp) but the car does run pretty rich and i'm not too worried about numbers... I realise its the turbo thats holding me back from higher power and with it being the original one, no doubt it is becoming tired after more than 100'000 on the clock.

As i've said, i'm not chasing numbers but i'm now looking at changing the turbo and was looking for some recommendations. So based on the power of the car now with what i've got, which turbos should I be looking at that will retain driveability and i'm not really looking to spend more than £400-500 (obviously i'm looking at a used item).

A TD0520G or one of the similar power capable turbos should see you into the numbers you were hoping for no problem surely

Cheers Banny... Of the turbos you've mentioned which of them has the highestrating in terms of power and are they capable of holding 1.8 bar?

VF48 would be the highest and in regards to the turbo holding 1.8 bar, I would imagine you could possibly make it peak at that in the midrange and then tail off but at 1.8bar you may actually not be making any more power just extra heat.

Best person to advise this would be the mapper

Would advise 1.55 bar area.

Why you got area 1.8bar focused on?

PD Tuning... feeling lucky like lol...

Aye, the only thing you'll need now is a bigger turbo... Harvey isnt too far from you (just in Darlington) and will be able to sort you out a decent turbo (20g as Dunx says above)

Or even speak to Alyn @ ASPerformace

Id personally go for a vf34 mate, can make 350 with ease on your setup and the spool to make a very potent and responsive road car.
Ive been told that a 20g[not billet mind] on the road compared to a 34 is slower due to lag in real world terms so the bit of top end you gain doesn't out weigh the slower spool.

But as it's forged why not aim for 400 bhp and relax if you only manage 390...

I did !

LoL

The VF22 is the biggest of the VF22/VF23/VF24 brigade. I was led to believe it was capable of high(ish) numbers e.g. 340-380+, no?

If that's the case, then I'd be disappointed, as the 550s are good for c.390+ (+ FMIC not a limiting factor at all).

But overfuelling will temper the power output, obviously.

If it can't make those numbers (via another remap) I'd defo replace the VF22 with a SC40 XTR Billet (basically a fettled 20g including a 33% lighter billet compressor wheel). Should be good for 360-380+ with your supp. mods (just watch that g/box...!!!)

Clutch should be okay for a while yet, its and uprated Exedy item... As for the gearbox though???

Yea, am tempted to scrap the injectors for some 700cc's, sort the intake and head towards 450bhp but its all just cash.

It seems a 20g is looking the most viable option, cost wise and for the simple fact I use the car daily

20g-based turbos are good for around 370-400.

You'd need something like the MD321T/T+ or SC46 if you're after c.450bhp...

740cc inj. would be fine for that power, though.

Yea, a few people have mentioned a MD321T.

Gearbox wise, whats the step up from my standard gearbox (without having to spend 2k on a six speed)... would it be an STi V3 or 4 gearbox?

No! It has to be 6-sp!

False economy otherwise, as any of the 5-sp WILL fail again at that level at some point...

Guess that settles it then... TD05 20G seems the right choice

What sort of intake setup is recommended? At the minute i've just got a K&N on the end of a hardpipe after the MAF.

Been trying a few things with the wing, but theres not much room in there and seems i'd need to go for a smaller filter to get it to fit... plus I cant find a kit for the classic?

If your K&N is a decent size, just keep that - it'll be fine.

BTW, the box could be on borrowed time at only 350+, so even a 20g could still test it!
