picked my short block up from my local engine builder today and was shocked when he asked for £622... cash (with out VAT)

they've replaced the big end and main shells, fitted new pistons, rods, and rings that I supplied.

they claimed the bearings alone were £200.

have i just had my pants pulled down?

they havnt even dipped the block, so its still dirty

 

What was the estimated cost when you ask him to do the work?

what bearings did he use as acl race ones arent even that much and to not even clean it is defo pants mate

not sure, i imagen OE ones for that price. i thought that about acl ones, even cosworth bearing arnt that much

and engine builder is 'cylinder re-bores' in nuneaton, were recommended by a freind... seemed quite clicky to me, like if you're not in the click, u get charged more

 

A quick google shows how much the bearings cost. If they've done both big ends AND mains, then maybe £200 is OK.

Mains & big ends in ACL race are only £91, if the outside of the blocks still dirty, so will the inside, i strongly suggest you start again as this on start up won't last long, if its not spotlessly clean its doomed.

i wouldnt trust anyone who didnt even clean the block

 

i had mine rebuilt it cost £1300 and i got a 12'000 mile wranty they done it with a new crank, pistons , every think for that

 

My rebuild cost £3k almost 10yrs ago ... £622 seems too good to be true?!

Short block 2.1 from Enginetuner is £2.3k plus VAT plus £100 if they supply the block

there is no way on this earth that the shells should have cost that much, i have built a number of types of engines ranging from motorbikes to trucks and the first thing i always do is clean the engine until it is spotless. if left dirty issues with the block may be missed and worse still when putting it back together some dirt particles could come into contact with moving/wearing surfaces or be trapped in oilways which means that the min you fire it up for the first time it could be instant curtains for the engine. imo it is unprofessional to not clean the engine which also raises the question that if they couldnt be bothered to clean it then what else have they not bothered to do!!! have they even split the block? are the heads of the bolts that hold the block together showing signs of having a spanner on them or are they still dirty?
