Previously had a STI 5 Type R. Which "Back in the day"(2003) was modded to push out 420BHP.

Anyways. Was looking recently for a good sporty "Family Car" of nowadays and have ended up buying an '06 Hawkeye.

Seems like I have bought what was intended. But, Good Lord! What a totally different car. As in. Boringly efficient

Where is the Soul?

I am sure these and other Forums, are packed full of posts on How to Mod "The Classic" How do I get the the driver input scenario to work? Barring wrecking/spending a fortune on the car?

 

Depends on what you call a fortune but I would say a pannel filter, walbro pump, decat and a remap and that will put some life back into it. In a good and bad way Subaru refined the newage and with doing that in my opinion took some of the feel and rawness out of them compared to the classic. I have not driven a hawkeye but have 2 05 sti's one being a ppp and have owned a 05 type 25 and that was a cracking car but just I never got that same buzz as I did in my p1 so sold it and got a highly tuned sti 5.

I would say do the above and possibly a decent set of springs, rear anti roll bar, drop links and anti lift kit and you should get some ofthat feeling back.

 

decat, panel filter and a remap will bring it to life.. but the rawness of the classic only really comes with a classic..
You would probably get from A to B quicker in a hawkeye with the same power but you would feel like it was slower.

Presuming you have bought a wrx. Pop the vf43 from the sti on there, decat exhaust and remap and you will see the soul in the car that Subaru tried to hide.

It's an STI with PPP. I bought it to use as the familycar to take over from my old Sierra and Rev 3 MR2 Turbo.

Think I'll have to keep the MR2 Just for fun?

Maybes I should just try harder with it.

 

i know what you mean - and its not the performance as such, more the soul thats missing.

i have a 2007 gb wagon and a 94 wagon. similar power but the 94 just feels so much more connected, you hear and feel everything. buzzing engine, strong steering feel, induction noise.... its just so much more organinc.

that said, the haweye is far nicer to roll around in when you are not in the mood for blasting.

safety ratings, customer refinement demands and ncap have tamed the raw beast.

My advice - buy a classic too for buttons and have it as a pick me up when you need it.

PMSL, I have a modified 1995 STi wagon that give me tingles, and a MY06 STi SpecD which hasn't been driven for months. Best thing I have done to the Spec D is stiffen the suspension and lock up every available squidgy bush. I am not done yet but roll bars, links, subframe, pitchstop etc all improve the connection with the car. However the electronic throttle is the biggest disconnection for me, super efficient etc etc but sensor deprivation galore.

 

Well I've had my car now for over a month. Have put in over 1000 miles. Basically it still feels like a big fat saloon!!! Sure it is quick and can handle and brake/accelorate better than most. But character is Well gone.

Was going to sell the Tubby. But I,m afraid I get more enjoyment from driving it. Jeaz My old standard Sierra 2.0GT is more entertaining.

Just too "Old school" I guess.

Not! Knocking the car so much as. Progress.

Anyways Back in the Scooby vein. I am getting New Tyres/Discs and pads fitted tomorrow. Not that it needs them. Just that... Well 'Tis what I used to do before...
