Power capabilities of a TDO5 20g turbo
I'm going to look at a classic STI RA this week which is running a 2.5 conversion with TD05 20g and supporting ancillaries.
Owner has a rolling road print out of 400/400 which seems very impressive, I don't know what sort of boost it's running to achieve this but owner said the map was done with pump fuel (tescos or shell) and doesn't need octane booster.
My question is, will a TD05 20g run these sort of power figures safely? Or is it going to melt after 1000 miles
Any help/comments very much appreciated as I don't want to buy a time bomb.

400 Seems to be about the limit on a 20g on Pump fuel, some even don't make that and top out at around 390.
With a 2.5 conversion and the correct pistons it should be safe

That's what I was thinking, I don't like running cars on their limits, would rather have a nice safety margin.
It's the 400 torque that was also slightly worrying, although I assume the 2.5 helps.
Not sure what 2.5 is in it, but assuming it's the lowest spec is 400/400 going to last?
Hmmmmmmmm, decisions, decisions.

If it has a safe rev limit it should be fine, however aftermarket pistons would be my choice.
Figures will vary form 370-420 depending on the dyno and other factors. But To be honest the 20g on a well set up 2.5 is a great drive and very reliable and i think figures will soon come second to that once the car has been driven.

I run a 2.5 with 20g, on std 2.5sti short motor, and had the same concerns when having it built, however by setting a sensible rpm limit , mine set at 7k, and with det free mapping on pump fuel, this should be very reliable. The power comes in much sooner with a 2.5, and the torgue is great, so losing a few rpm really is not an issue.
A 2.5 with a 20G, in a classic with low gearing is awsome!
Cheers for the comments guys.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a pub figure sort of person, I couldn't give a monkey's what the actual bhp/torque is, was just concerned that perhaps this sort of power was a bit much for the 20g.
Car has also got a jdm new age 6 speed box mated up to the 3.9 diff so acceleration should still be electric although I don't think it utilises the DCCD any more.
Will report back once I've viewed the car, has nice bits, brembo's up front, blistein suspension so seems to have all been done properly and engine has only done approx 1500 miles.

Hmmmmmmm,
checking with the garage that mapped the car (who are very reputable I might add
) It's seems that power was around 380 and torque about 400.
But........the turbo might only be an 18g and not a 20g as previously thought. Will this melt running this sort of power?
On the plus side, it looks like the 2.5 was built with forged internals

Thanks guys,
I'm talking to the garage that built the car and the seller is trying to find out for sure whether it's an 18g or 20g.
At present, I'm not interested in gaining more power really, just want to make sure the car will run safely.
So provided a bog standard 2.5 with an 18g can run 380/400 I'm quite happy as that seems to be the worst case scenario if the seller can't produce any more info. For the spec of the car and the price, I'd certainly be happy with this set up
If it is a 20g with forged internals then all the better

I own a 2.5 WRX with a VF43(STi 9 UK Turbo) fitted, my figures are 377Bhp and 380lb ft, I'd say you'll have no problems with a 20G at 400/400 figures from the 2.5, I know one of our members(Tyneteesscoobies) with a 2.0 bugeye that has an 18G fitted and he has around 380Bhp and that has run like that for 2-3years

If its got the std gearbox I'd be concerned about its limits too
400 Lbft is going to test any OE 5 speed, be it STI / 754 etc

I'm currently running a 20G on a 2.5 with supporting mods on a V5 STI Type R, current power figures are 374bhp and 375ft/lbs, added a few more mods and getting re-mapped again in 2 weeks and hoping for around 400/400
As mentioned above, it's got a JDM new age 6 speed box.
After driving the car I had to buy it, absolutely flew. The seller was very trusting, just chucked me the keys and said knock yourself out

Went for a quick blast and was blown away by the performance. When I got back the seller said "I forgot to tell you it's only in low boost running 1.4 bar" !!!!!!
High boost was set for about 1.75, haven't tried it at this, don't think I need to, lol .
Just need to work out exactly what it is now, seems to have a sti ra vin no but no roof vent

Needs a little tidying but the engine and gearbox were superb.

Didn't read that bit about the gearbox, lol
Looks like a similar spec to mine, bar the turbo - which will be a 20g v.soon.
Enjoy the car - 20g 1.75 bar on a 2.5? blimey!
