this might sound like a stupid question but what does the mass air flow sensor do and why does it cause so much trouble ive got a 99 classic and im in the middle of having my car remaped so that it doesnt need the maf what do you guys think of this

 

Re-Mapped so that it doesn't use the MAF??

The ECU needs some way of measuring the AirFlow ......

If you are not using the MAF what are you using??

Also, problems tend to happen when an afternmarket Induction Kit is fitted - mine is original, 83,000miles, 7 1/2 years old and is running as it always has!

 

you can get an ecu that uses a map based reading but thats a very expensive way to go just to get rid of the maf,unless your going for very high power.

 

The mass air flow sesnor measures the mass air flow into the engine, it causes problems when the hot film (that is cooled by the airflow thus giving a change in electrical resistance proporional to airflow) either getting damaged, buring out or getting coated with debris, the 99 and 00MY one is particularily bad (although there is a much better Bosch replacemnet) for some reason known only to Denso and Subaru!

None MAF based EMS are what is known as "speed density" and use manifold pressure (and other data) to create an air density in the manifold versus a known volumetric efficiency at that speed and load to calculate airflow.
