And if its a 99/00 car, just replace it.

Although not sure why you feel the need to clean it ? What sort of dirt is on it ? What age of car ?

its my mates 98 sti , he fitted a induction kit a few weeks ago and now the car is starting to run like a dog ! he thinks deposits of oil from the filter might have go onto the hot wire in the sensor

Possible, but maybe not...It wouldnt be that common for oil from filter to cause such problems, unless it had really been loaded up with oil.

The MAF on anything except 99/00 cars are extremely reliable.

APEXI INDUCTION KIT, costs a bit but worth the money. Never had any trouble with mine. Until I put a scoop bonnet vent in, rain got into the cone and got wet.

wont do a button of harm to the older ones ( and newage )

And blaming it for failure on 99/00 cars doesnt really hold much weight either, when they fail all the time regardless of which filter is used.

I was always of the impression that the excess oil would adhere to the maf elements and cause problems
especially with the older models ( the ones with the really expensive mafs )
To be honest I don't think I have ever seen a scoob with an oiled K&N filter fitted.

Think I will stick to a dry filter anyway

All that style of filter do come oiled from the factory....over time it does dissappear though.
They wouldnt have sufficient oil to cause any real damage, or cause any real problems though.
Im sure millions of cars around the world have similar filters, with airflow meters, and few problems.

He can try cleaning it, but do so with caution. IMO cleaning it would have a far higher risk, than running a K&N in terms of damaging it. If cleaning, do so very very gently. Spraying carb cleaner should be sufficient though.

One example of a dry filter...is a Blitz stainless steel mesh. And they dont filter anything, pure dung.
They will allow a build up of dirt on the airflowmeter.

RB5 is a 99/00, so does not use the older reliable type of MAF.

It uses the cheaper, unreliable one. There is only 1 type.

As I said. RB5 is a 99/00, for which there is only one MAF type. There are no coloured labels.

i dont think i do have a MAF problem tbh,

its only in the cold mornings en route to work i notice a slight hesitation about 2k revs, then once the temp needle gets to about half way its fine, never any problems once the car warms up or once the outside temp rises later in the day

i`m going to go this week and order a replacement anyway just purely for piece of mind

my local dealer is ur man on the portaferry road, best to use him or go to say donnellys?
