hi guys.i am a new impreza owner (96 wrx turbo) and while i was looking under the bonnet the other day i found a second dipstick near the turbo.is this gearbox oil?
if it is then the level is low so where/how do i fill it?
Also my engine oil is low...ish so i was wondering what engine oil you all use and can recommend before i buy some **** oil from a petrol station.

 

One by the turbo is the gearbox, you fill the gearbox via the dipstick tube.

10w-40 oil will be ok for topping up the engine between services.

 

it is VERY important that you do not over fill the gearbox oil.

ok so do i just buy gearbox oil from a petrol station and fill through the tube till i get the right level on the dipstick.how the hell do i get the oil into the thin tube??
as far as engine oil is any 10w40 ok?

 

You'll have to attach a tube to a funnel or bottle to do this, takes a while adding oil too, otherwise it overflows.

 

I use 10w40 in my 93 wrx and it's fine

 

why?

 

It will overpressurise the gearbox casing, causing the seals to leak, the oil to drain away and the gears to break up or sieze.

Why don't you just use the gearbox filling plug

 

You mean the drain plug.?!?..might get messy ....as there is no fillling plug on a Classic gearbox

 

No, smart ****, I said the filling plug because I meant the filling plug. I was not aware that the classics did not have these. Although to be fair, any car manufacturer that does does not provide a filling plug is guilty of a gross oversight

I gave advice based on experience of owning and maintaining these things over the past seven odd years. I would post anything if I didn't know for sure.

Most cars with automatic transmissions have an identical filling arrangement via the dipstick tube, why Subaru felt the need to adpot it on their manual transmissions is beyond me.

And why they put it right next to the turbo so you burn yourself when trying to check it when hot will be one of those Subaru quirks listed alongside the "bright" button, and the rocker switch on top of the steering column that makes the side lamps stay on.

I was just basing my assumption on the fact that my new age has a filling plug and in the 17 years I have spent as a motor vehicle technician, I have never come across a vehicle that needs to be filled through the dipstick tube (unless it is to wind up the new apprentice )

I have read and understand that I fill the gearbox oil via the dipstick tube. However a friend whom I regard as quite knowledgable about cars said I would need to remove the air filter box thing to get to it, to top it up. Is this wrong for the classic? He has only owned a new age impreza.

My Scooby is a 1999 UK Turbo.

Also, I didnt see a answer to konceppt question about which gearbox oil to use, is there a good oil to use for my pride and joy, or will an old stuff from the local garage do?

You need 75w90. Castrol Driveline (old Syntrax) is a popular choice
