I am sick of triers in saxo vtrs golf vr6s,pug 205s etc and the odd BM, why do these people always want to race you.If any of the above mentioned are reading this take a peice of advice and stay in your owm leauge.I would not try to race a 1000bhp skyline so why try to race me, and when you do want to drive fast do it somewhere safe out on a b road at 5.00am instead of friday tea time.The last thing you want when you are going down the kentucky after work is a bloody saxo up your ****, these pratts dont even know that my cars engine needs to warm up fully before it can be booted, at least 5 miles driving.I was caugt speeding in the summer on a quiet b road (police scooby) the copper was very lenient to me as he said it was a quiet road and i was driving a very capable car.So to all you saxos etc a word of advice...you will always come 2nd any road any track any weather conditions SO STOP BUGGING US!!!

IN what terms 0-60, cornering, wet weather handling, even with traction control an M5 is a slower car as proved at oulton park track day 20th oct 00.(was this you I kept lapping??) horses for courses mate and yours is cruising

Indeed I do, just a poverish MY00 though, can't afford the insurance for anything quicker.
I would recommend taking general remarks a little less seriously though.

 

Indeed craig got me there It was whenever a scoob was up for a real play on the road - duel carrageway and A roads - M5 simply roared by. Probably due to the fact that it just goes straight up to the speed limiter, no questions asked which is was by the scoobs capabilities (supposidly )

Dual Carriageways and A roads ? ie straight roads no bends .

Top Speed in the UK is not important to most drivers as 100mph+ = Ban . Most Mondeo and Vectra drivers pass me on Motorways .

I base my car buying on drivability, handling, grip and the all important midrange punch. If it only does 145 instead of 155 I'll manage. If you want a fast limo buy an M5, if you want a performance car for the enthusiast buy a Scoob.

Handling - subjective word. Feel it best surgests how good your car is once you go slightly past your limits of driving - found the BM rather good and easy to bring out of slides. Grip - It did have 285 rubber on the back
Drivablity - With no turbo and huge torque...doesnt get much better.
As I said - I would hate for you to think I had judged you as being single minded
I admit it is much more sanitised, heavy , not as much ultimate grip slower turn in. But I sure never felt worried about being shown up by a puny 2 litre turbo if he tried to race me

I think you are getting a little confused the m5 is being compared to a sti type r and not a stock uk turbo these are two very different cars in terms of performance

Is this a case of 'my car appears to be considerably faster than yours'.

Every cars has its league and I have seen Imprezas try to take on cars that are in different leagues to it. No doubt they think the same thing of Imprezas as you think of Saxos, Pugs etc.

Impreza drivers can do no wrong it seems.

My friends got an sti 4 type r if you want a direct comarison - my stage on cossie could inch past it(remembering it was the most powerful stage 1 recorded at local rollers) until the top end where the gearbox packs in on the scoob. The M5 was much faster than the cossie just didnt feel it in car - so smooth.
Played in the type r and it is a fast car - gearbox kills it a bit as it seems too short for big racing.
Stay single minded if you want......Im just giving opinions of different cars I've driven. And believe me - the guy in the type r doesnt hold back - he wanted that win!

All this talk of racing at 130-140mph is rather irrelevant imho, so what if something is fast in a straight line.

I would like to see an M5, 540 or whatever keep up on the twisty bits, in the wet.

Everyone to their own and all that but for me the scoob/evo's etc are a different league to beemers etc. Ultimately they are closely related to their rally cousines and that says a great deal for me.

Of course there are cars around that are quicker than an Impreza, however for sheer value for money, performance and driver involvement I think you have to spend quite a bit more to get bigger bang per buck.

You can keep your sausage eating motors, I'm quite content with the land of the rising sun.

 

And you can buy a Turbo 4x4 206 for the road?

And by the time those manufacturers DO catch up then the scooby will have beaten them to it by a mere....oooo.....7-8 years to produce a reliable road car?

Your attitude to scoobs just about sums up all BMW owners i've ever got "involved" with on the road. What IS their problem? Does buying a BMW turn otherwise normal drivers into supercilious look-at-my-status-symbol ones? Apparently...

I believe there's an RS Focus on the cards, so the Scoob/Evo won't be the only 'roading WRC' cars available.

Mind you, 200bhp through 2 wheels should make for excellent traction. Not.

Don't be so sure, I 'bettered' a new 5.0 litre 400bhp M5 in a straight line over the weekend, and this was from c40mph - mid-range grunt territory!!

Granted mine isn't quite a standard UK MY99, but the look on the M5 driver's face was more than worth the cost of the modifications!!

Does the 'king of the road' entitlement come as a non-deletable option on all BMWs?

 

In the summer coming onto a Dual C from slip road I joined the inside lane as there was a Beemer (didn't take much notice which one) in the outside lane who slowed up and flashed at me to let me out...

...as soon as I did (he was 100yrds behind) he booted it and was right up my **** with me having no where to go and at 90 I had run out of Scooby magic power! It was a very new M5.

However, he followed me along some quiet B roads and even in a straight line, between 40-60 (ish ) I would leave him.

In reals, speed is down to driver ability - at Dono on Friday even a Merc C36AMG was faster than me - not because his car was faster, but because I need more practice

So Stage 1 may well be faster than all of us, in his Mini, if he is a good driver.

I think we have a majority verdict here

 

I get more hassle from Passats, Mercs (usually drive by grey haired old boys), Pug 406's and BM3 series and Vecra GSI's than the Max Power Brigade - something to do with 'Rep Power' or going through the Male menopause/menoporsche (in the Merc old boys case) I believe. I tend to get admiring looks (the car not me!) from the Escort and Nova boys.

Did enjoy pulling away from a new shape M5 on the way over to Silverstone in my Slightly modded MY99 4dr.

I suppose that i will have to watch out for Pug 205's with Grundholm wannabees behind the wheel - oh joy!

Sorry Guys, but the road test figures suggest
M5 (1994 on) is quicker (not by much) 0 to 60, 30 to 70, 50 to 70 in gear and has much higher top speed (170 mph).

New M5 is considerably faster on paper at all except 0 to 60.

Sure a uk scoob with equal talented drivers will be quicker a to b on the twisties and in the wet, but ultimately the M5 will be the quicker car than a standard UK scoob in a straight line/motorway/wide A road etc.

WRX/STI will be different though - but new UK scoob wouldn't have a chance it seems..

So lets be realistic here....

Th fastest acceleration I have seen on the road was from an M5. 60 - 120 in about 'ooh it's one of them'

I was just looking in my mirror, admiring the head lights on low beam, (where the circle on the outside of the lamp lights up.)
It was past me before I even had time to hit the peddle, never mind turbo lag.
(I'd still prefer a HSB)

 

I simply made the points I felt relevent. I admit the short comings of the M5 for weight etc.... but In a straightish line when given proper boot, keeping in mind I had no respect for the car - it was definately not worried by subarus. Bearing in mind the engine did blow up - it has something in common with the scoobs.
As for the 540 You would have absolutely no chance. I refer you to the for sale section and nick hills bmw 333turbo that is for sale. The tuning company AVA that did his car are good friends of mine and I will be buying a knackered 540 for a reason. First thing will be an engine rebuild with twin turbos (rather large T35s). Full custom management etc.... Looking for very high bhp, so no its not quite slippers time yet

Say I've got a BMW attitude if you want - doenst bother me. I'm just a fan of fast cars and told it how it happened. Had at least 5 "real" encounters with scoobs where they must have gone to 135-140mph. sorry but I was looking in the rear view at them.
