Unfortunately I am having second thought's about getting a Euro WRX MY02, mainly for 3 reasons;
1) High cost of maintenance (4 service's per year)
2) Fuel consumption (£110 per week)
3) My insurance (£950 per year Business Class)
If money was no object then I would definitely be driving one, but I have to be realistic about my choice of car as I am driving it every day doing at least 25,000 miles pa.
Can anyone recommend a 4dr hatch/saloon that is reasonably quick but also does at least 30mpg?
I was pondering about either a Clio 172 or a Civic Type-R but both are 3dr's.

If you drive gently, the std scooby's milage ain't that bad! Used to return almost 10km per L on my previous MY00, mainly highway miles. My record from full tank to reserve light was 463km, and I do believe that at that fillup, only about 50L went in.

Guess its nice in the sense that it'll return reasonable economy if you need it, but you still can have a blast on the weekends.

 

Yeah but what's the point of owning a Scooby if you're going to drive it THAT gently. Best I EVER got was 7.1km/l on a 400 mile run. Used to average around 6km/l mostly.

I now drive an MY02 Civic TypeR and average around 7.4km/l without really trying.

Funny, but I was gonna suggest exactly the same thing !

Accord Type R, but don't know the price either.

 

IIRC, an Accord Type R is about £20,000 in standard spec (List is £21,500?).

Trouble is a 2 yr Contract Hire for the Type R is about £450 + vat, whereas the WRX is about £250 + vat.

 

Well after looking around all the manufacturer websites I've decided on the new VW Golf GT TDI PD, 150bhp top speed of 134mph 0-60 in 8secs and best of all 52mpg!!

I'm sure the Golf will be very nice. Evo called it the best Golf ever.

However, with the long gearing on a diesel - because of lower rev limit, that 280lbft or whatever it is of torque unfortunately doesn't translate into the sort of shove a petrol car's gearbox would provide with that torque. In other words, torque at wheels would be about 2/3 that of a petrol engine producing 280lbft at the same road speed in the same gear. But still quite a lot of shove

 

John B, drive one and you will be surprised...I have one sitting in the garage at the moment, freshly imported and ready for the first of January Don't forget the 6 speed box spreads the ratios nicely, 6th gear is long but is really for the cruising and acheiving good economy.

Be careful with the 150 bhp cars on import as the waiting list is long, apparently due to the amount of cars entering the UK. Also watch you don't get fobbed off with a 130bhp model chipped to 150bhp and specced up, as I've heard of this happening.

How About a LEXUS IS200.I had the same problem with running costs until I changed to a IS200.Its not as quick but you can still have fun by turning the traction control off,it has a 6 speed box,6 cyl engine and comes fully loaded all for about £21,000

 

Very nice Fris but it still doesn't do 50-70 in top gear in 5 seconds (this should be a diesel's best relative to petrol) or 30-70 through the gears in 4.5.

IS300 more like it but still a bit slow.

IMO the best perfomance 4/5 door family car you can get for £15k.

You're obviously a "Scooby Fan", as were going to buy an Impreza, but are worried about the cost of ownership. Given your high mileage it's understandable. I would therefore consider a non turbo impreza or legacy with an official LPG Conversion. These are available through www.keyring-cars.co.uk. The cost of the conversion would be saved within the year and thereafter you'd be enjoying half price fuel. Has to be worth considering !

I've spent quite a lot of time in Singapore over the last 10-12 years, and you might be able to answer a question.

Given that Singapore (much as I adore the place) is not somewhere you can drive quickly, I'm always amazed at the quantity of performance cars. Where do you guys go to enjoy your cars, or are they mainly a status thing?

LPG was a living nightmare for my "other" car. Assuming the conversion is successful, there is nothing more annoying than diverting 5 miles to a BP garage to find out that they've run out of LPG - and for this to happen about every sixth fill up. As for the conversion, the "company" in question ruined a perfectly good Range Rover.

 

I know it's only a 3dr but launched on 2nd Jan 02 is the new Toyota Corolla T-Sport with 190bhp 6,speed box,Traction control etc all for 16 grand

 

Apparently the new Corolla's chassis is OK, but not as good as a Focus. But the 190bhp Toyota engine is gutless low down. My neighbor has a Celica 190, and we went out in it. He revved the **** of it and it felt like my Scooby at 3500rpm.

 

Astra Coupe Turbo, 20,000 mile services 25-35 MPG depending on how hard you drive it. As you can obtain it as an import it should be within your budget. As quick (or quicker than a Civic type R !!)
