If your car is doing 6000RPM then parts in your engine are turning and moving 100 times every second .... My brain simply can't fathom something moving that quickly ......

 

Like when you type a message on the internet to Australia - it gets there instantly!!

But electrons have to move all that distance - you would end up in my nuthouse with me if you thought about it too much!!

Then try thinking about the speed of light and the space/time continuum, and how it affects our perception of our universe and beyond!

 

And when you look out into space you are actually looking into the past seeing stars that are actually not there anymore. While you ponder this also consider how insignificant the earth and it's inhabitants are in a universal context!

The crank is rotating 100 times a second, but the number of reciprocations depends on the type of engine (4 stroke, 2 stroke) and how many cylidners and valves it has.

It is totally mental to think about it though!

 

I think you should apply some more thought to that statement!

 

 

Number of reciprocations is the same. Number of power strokes vary per 2 or 4 stroke. Valve gear in 4 stroke runs at half the speed.
If you think 6k is fast in a 4 stroke just consider the latest F1 engines turning at 20k! Fancy mapping one of those??

At 6k the 2ltr. engines piston does 0 to 33.5 mph (rounded) in 0.0025 sec. (How sad's that for a Saturday afternoon )

 

Sorry to bring this back from the dead (been away over easter) but im intrigued by this statement from Davey, as he seems to be knowledgeable.

How does this work then Davey? 100 RPS in a 2 stroke = 200 reciprications, 100 RPS in a 4 stroke = 400 reciprications.

Could you give us a formula for this involving number of valves/cylinders etc?

 

Is this thread about RPM or football? if the latter then surely it should be in the sports forum and not cluttering up general

 

Dont worry I'm talking out of my ****.. Obviously every revolution will mean every piston will have recipricated once (obviously the starting and rest point depends on what position the crank was in when you started turning it), same with the valves.

I was thinking more along the lines of how many moving parts not how often they move, forgive me for being a dick.

 

i think that at 18,000 rpm a piston in an F1 car travels at 25 m/s, imagine the stresses on the bigend!

Any engineer would know that the electrons themselves don't move all that distance, the "motion" is transfered from one electron to the next. Think of it like a very long train with lots of carridges. As the engine on one end of the train pushes the motion is transfered from carridge to carridge via the couplings eventually resulting in the carridge furthest away from the engine moving. Same goes for electrons in electricity cable.

Of course sending a message on the Internet to Australia is a very bad example as the "electrons" have to pass through all sorts of media more than likely getting turned into light at some point for transfer through fibre optics.
