I am thinking about getting racing harnesses fitted to my Impreza - road legal ofcourse.
Has anyone had this done, if so what are they like? Where did you have them fixed to? and do the rear passengers suffer (don't really care about passengers, just interested).
Also whats the best makes to go for.

I have Willans 4 point FIA approved Harnesses. The mounting eyes you get screw into the standard seatbelt mounting points. You can usually leave the old belts in place. The rear straps go down to the lower belt mount points.

Rear seat passengers are knackered! But then I have no rear seat so don't worry! But the belts clip in and out easily so you can remove them if you need to carry people.

Go for anything FIA approved, if I was to get some again I'd go for an aircraft style release Mechinism tho' makes them easier to put on!

Makes driving completely different! You'll find that you won't reach the steering wheel properly from you normal seating postion once you are strapped in!

I use OMP 3" 4 point harnesses for Sprinting, track plays etc.

Completely ruin access to the rear seat, but they're on clips through the eyes anyway.
One mine the two rear eyes replace the original seat belt bolts. The middle lower eye required a hole drilling through the floor pan though....SCAREY.

Scott ~ seconded, they totally transform the driving experience, and I sit about 2 notches closer with the harnesses on !!

I use a full FIA approved Sabelt 4 point harness with 3" webbing. I had thought about fitting harnesses a few times, but once I saw Pat's setup and found that they mount from the standard seatbelt mounting points I went ahead and splashed the cash.

My major reason for fitting these was to fasten me into the seat better so I can make more use of what the car is telling me... much improved safety is a bonus.

I can just drop the top straps through my seat and use the standard belt if I want to carry a passenger behind me.

Note: IIRC, when fitting the harness, it helps to move one of the spacers from the front right mount point to the front left, so the harness clears the seatrail mountpoint.

Technically you are supposed to have a seat belt that can be secured with one hand... but I've never had any problems with the harneses I've fitted to my cars. They do need a 'E' mark (i think) on the belt to indicate it is road legal. The suppliers will be able to advise (eg demon tweeks)

Get one with wide webbing and comfort pads on the shoulders. When you are strapped in its like you have fitted superwide wheels. You start cornering so much faster as you get much bette feedback from the car.
And you feel a lot safer

I have a TRS harness in my car, clubman model I think with a detachable tail (should rear seats need to be used).

I got it and fitted it because it was free and very happy with it. Might upgrade to a 3inch webbing system though as 2 inch *seems* too thin.

Benefit to road/track use other that restraint in event of an accident, is that it holds you to your seat which makes it easy to steer while hard cornering. I.e. instead of hanging on to the steering wheel to stop yourself moving, the only movements on the wheel are for direction changes. If that makes sense Recommended for track use especially.
