Default Horn!

No its not Aftershave from men behaving badly.

One little thing that annoys the hell out of me is the feeble horn on my car.

Has anyone on here bought a better one and if so where from and what sort?

I would like something a bit more manly but not stupid sounding! (if you know what I mean!)

Cheers Dudes

I thought the exact same thing when I got my 02WRX, sounds really gay for a big car, especially when you use it in anger and all you get is people laughing at you!!!

I changed mine to a "RING" double tone horn. Was about £15 - £20 from Halfrauds and comes with two seperate horns, also came with a relay, found that the original horn already had a relay in situ, so used this one instead.
Was a bit of a tight squeeze between the radiator and the front grill, but after bending the brackets slightly it fitted without touching either.

Sounds sooo much better now, louder and a real "grown up" car sound, the only problem I get is when I beep at my Scooby mates as they dont realise it's my hooter as they are expecting a little girlie "BEEP" instead of the HMS Scooby"BEEP" it's now got.

.............dont get anymore laughing now, most people get a bit of a shock

If you are at teh junk yard get ones of a Fiat Brava/Bravo. They're 2 of them and they sound very decent.

It really is loud, had a couple of joggers almost jump up a tree once when I blasted it, makes kids jump as well especially when they are trying to look "hard" in front of their mates, when I sit outside my local shop waiting for the Mrs to come out and I see a bunch of hoodies walk past I make sure i give them a good blast, the reaction is priceless

i have some of these ring twin horns, just not fitted them yet. thought it was just 2 wires but it has relays and all sorts?!? is the impreza a positive or earth activated system (wired up differently according to instrustions)?

im guessing the grill has to come out too - i haven't looked yet but is this easy to do? (just on lugs im guessing but where are these located?)

many thanks

I've recently bought a Stebel Nautilus horn which is supposed to be quite noticeable

I'm interested in an answer to the above question too. Can I just use the feed from the old horn or do I have to wire the new one in completely independently of the old one using the supplied relay etc?

cheers,
Nige.

Nige, the best way is to use a relay but use the existing live feed to your horn as the trigger current for the relay, you can then get an instant high power blast instead of a faint build up where the existing curcuit cannot handle the extra loading.

finally got them fitted (ring twins)!!!! took a while but it looks very pro! the scoob originally had two horns, each with a single wire to them (earths via bracket) i only needed one of these (to go to the relay) so i taped the other up.

the brackets supplied would not fit as the bend/offset was it the wrong place. i therefore straightened them out and re-bent them to fit. one wire from each horn goes back to the relay. the other wire on each horn need to be earthed so as the originals earthed to the bracket, i fixed my earth wire to the bracket.

a live was required - ran from battery to the relay (with in-line 10a fuse). i mounted the relay to a spare threaded hole just below the bonnet catch + as it also need an earth i put this wire round the relays securing bolt.

i also put extra sheathing around the wires to stop it getting damaged + rubber boots over all the spade connectors.

definately sounds more 'GET OUT OF MY WAY' now!!!
