I made a slight "wheel kerbing-type" scrape on the edge of my front wheel arch last week. I now have some touch-up paint & I'm going to spend this weekend not doing a crap job on it!

The car is a WR1, the scrape is on the edge of the wheel arch & is about 1" long & down to the white primer.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to do a good job please?

 

Yes, stop messing about and get a Pro like Little Knocks or Chips Away to do it right, it'll probably only cost you the price of a tank or 2 of Optimax.

No offence intended Olly, but I can see exactly what bit was painted where the crater shaped dent was at the front of the wing.

And if its that clear in a photograph, must be really obvious in real life.

I saw a pro bodyshop called TJS near Bristol (they're highly recommended). To get the job done really properly, would cost around £350. The guy suggested that I try touchup paint first, because the damage is only very slight.

I've found from experience that although the mobile guys can do good work with dents, they can be pretty poor with paintwork. Some problems can take a year or so to show up.

 

More a poor reflection on the photo (and a dirty wing), in real life you can't spot it. The only very slight give away is when the bonnet is shut as the gap widens at the tips slightly as you can see on the first photo.

The paint finish is spot on as he re-sprayed the whole wing, not patch sprayed.

 

Here's a pic of the scratch, as you can see it's only very slight. I'm not sure I want a big job done & the consequent matching/blending work.

I still could do with some touch-up advice though....

Best get a matching arerosol made up by Halfords or Brown Brothers-you just need to give them the code number for your paint colour.

Filling, rubbing down, spraying the immediate area with primer, the colour, and then aerosol lacquer followed by polishing with Brasso or T-cut will leave it looking like new for a fraction of the cost.

Those touch up brushes never produce a good job believe me.

Over the weekend, my wife (she's an artist) has applied 6 thin touch-up coats to the scratch using a tiny artist brush. The car has been left in my garage with a heater keeping the temp at around 18°C. How long should I wait before I Swissol cleanse & wax the area?

 

At least 7 days to allow the paint to harden.
