All 4 of my original Bridgies are up for renewal after 22,000 miles.

Unfortunately, I have only a very limited option on which to get.

Basically I can have Continentals (Leaseplan's 1st choice) or go to Michelin or Uniroyals. I have asked the dealer to get in Michelin's (MXV's)as the "better option" Are they any good? Anybody have any experience with them?

Any guidance would be great.

Anything I've read about Continentals is negative so I do not recommend them. I think that Uniroyal may be part of Continental but I'm not sure if the tyres are the same. I had a pair of Uniroyals at one stage and they were very average.

Michelin MXV used to be standard fit on old Impreza turbos (my MY95 had these). They last forever. They used to be available in various types such as SX and HX I think, and have Pilot written on the tyres. The HX were standard fit and when I changed these I opted for the supposedly sporty SX, which were worse than the original HX.

Overall I would certainly choose the Michelins (preferably HX) over the other choices.

I have Conti's on my MY93 WRX (std 15" rims)and they seem reasonable after 8K miles.

The car can aquaplane over standing water, and understeers sometimes at low speed in the wet, but otherwise no complaints, and they are not even half worn. Handling in the dry is stable and predicatble. (Perhaps I'm not driving hard enough )

Anyway, having said that, I've got nothing to compare against as the tyres were new when I got the car.

Just my few pennies worth....

Yeh, good point Robski, hadn't thought of that - well worth a go!

 

I had the same 'problem with a Honda Civic VTI - I opted for the Michelins - they where a vast improvement over the original rubber - can't for the life of me think what was on it beofre though - For what it is worth, I would go for the Michelins over your other options.

 

I would argue that you should have original equipment fitted, i.e. bridgstones.

I had ContiSport Contacts on when purchased car - Bloody AWFUL tyre.

Did two track days and still couldn`t wear them out - So bined them!!!! They are about 80% harder than S02`s or F1 (by the wear rating)

Unpredictable breakaway in the dry - TERRIBLE wet grip.

Basically felt unsafe in the wet.

Goodyear F1 now - awsome.

 

I'll second James on that, the Conti's are RUBBISH (on my 15" wheels anyway). I've never known a tyre to give so much understeer. I had Dunlop sp sports before and they were bad enough but the continentals are without doubt worse. I've got no experience of the others though. I now run the 17" Toyo TS-1 (much better and happier ).

 

I think I need to look for some new wheels and tyres......

Obviously I'm missing something running on Conti's.
