Default Oil burning smell

Hi All,

Could someone try and pinpoint me in the right direction.

I have a Subura Impreza Catalunya 1997 model. At the moment I am getting some burning oil smell coming from the car but not all the time. There is no smoke anywhere what so ever coming from the engine bay. I replaced the right hand side rocker gasket 2-years ago and it is definitely not leaking from there. I have looked in the engine bay and can't see any leaks.
Anybody got any ideas what might be causing this ?

Cheers

Gary.

Mine does this also....no leaks under car or sign of leaks under bonnet.

My MY99 does this too, I assume it comes from the turbo and you get it from either a VTA dump valve or from the turbo surging when using no dv at all.

Do you all use VTA's?

Reminds me of MK1 Golf GTI's ans S1 rs turbo's

Maybe, my '97 does it too. I'm pretty sure it's blowby oil from the crankcase breather getting routed into the inlet by the PCV system and burnt (i.e it's normal). You only get it sometimes because it takes a while for 1 drop of oil to build up and get blown through - it doesn't take much oil to make a smell. I have an oil catch can to go on which I'm hoping will fix it, I'll report back once that is done.

Lads,

Mine uses the standard dump valve. Might be worth me taking it off and checking the hoses around there.

Keep up the comments.

cheers

Sounds reasonable as I am using a VTA dump valve.

Just had a similar problem on my UK MY98 but with oil spots on the drive overnight and the very occasional puff of light smoke whilst stopped at lights etc. Checked with Scooby mechanic and the two favourites are rocker head cover but more usually the crank shaft seal. Mine was the latter not that bad except the cam belt could get contaminated so Subaru recommend a new belt (It has to come off anyway for the repair). There is a link below on this page where I asked for advice on new belt or not. Opinions are divided but I managed to find a belt for under £50 from CAMSPORT in Aberystwith. http://www.camsport.co.uk/. Andrew the boss there is very helpful.
