Hi all, I am about to buy a '99 UK Turbo.... however I do 500+ miles a week,about 2 thirds motorway.I have been told several times (by dealers) that 28-30 mpg is perfectly possible cruising in 5th at 65 on the motorway, however other people have said 20 mpg is the best I'll get. Anyone here know if either of these is true? as if I can't get 25 mpg on the motorway then I don't think I can afford to run the car.My current car (16v Calibra) gives 400+ miles to 40 quids worth,need to get over 300 for that price.Please help!!!!!

 

I average 23mpg but mainly country roads so no constant speeds. (02 JDM WRX)

Did drive very carefully for a tank and managed 29mpg on the same country roads so if you can keep the speed down on a motorway you should easily beat that.

i managed about 280miles in mine once,but it has been tuned a little,it's a my99 tho

My MY99 Wagon once acheived 31 mpg with a roof box on although to get this i had to use little of it's performance but if ur on the motorway at a reasonable speed you should get mid to late 20's

Did just over 300 miles before the little petrol thingy light came on, mixture of town and motorway, MY99.
You can get decent economy if you dont go over 65 on motorways but when the turbo kicks in watch the level drop fast..

 

Depends on how you drive your car really
I use to get 33-35mpg out of my MY00 PPP car if i took it really steady, average was around 30mpg though with a little spirited driving, you could get much less than that with alot of spirited driving though

Have an 03 WRX PPP, best I get on the m way at a steady 80 is 23mpg. My average inc commuting is approx 19mpg. Never got anywhere near 30, not even on a 300 mile m way journey when i didn't accelerate hard (and it was boring too!).

If you can't afford the petrol I'd think again as the servicing costs are pretty high too, unless you have a good specialist and are happy to leave the dealer network.

 

Last week I got 37 mpg out of my MY95 Most of my driving was on M-ways which I took at 55 - 60 mph. I recon I can probably *just* get 400 miles out of the 50 liter tank.

It's done 198,000 miles and has 16" wheels with center de-cat, powerflow exhaust and ScoobyECU.

 

you should get 28-30 at 65 no problem, that is with the odd overtake as well

 

I get about 120 miles out of £20 Optimax in my 94 WRX. Mainly urban driving.

I think it works out at about 21-23 mpg.

Obviously steady motorway driving would push it up a bit.

I put a post on a while ago, we went to Scotland from Notts did 80 mph all the way, I put £45 of fuel in and did 711 miles. the route was through Chesterfield to Manchester around 50 miles using the gears, on M60, M61, M6, M74 and up to Perth. I do not get this return whilst on short journeys. Standard MY99 Turbo

 

I constantly get 22mpg from my MY00 PPP, but i suppose the work run doesnt help!

 

Just about to get rid of my 97 MY Turbo for a 03 Prodrive WRX whooopeeeee....But the 97 Turbo has been an exellent car. Could easily get 30mpg cruising on the motorway. Seems to give better economy at 80mph than 65mph. It all depends on how smoothly you drive (ie how much you engage the Turbo). That was running on 95 RON (but I will have to run on 97 RON minimum with the new car.

So you bought one. You made the big purchase. Now use it.

If you only get 20mpg, then at least you will have some pleasure from driving. At 55 to 60 (Nimbus) on a Motorway you are a danger to yourself and all the truckers doing 56mph who will think 'what a tossa'. Most of them have 400hp and do 8mpg. Do your best to match that.......

 

Ok, mines an MY04WRX but I have no problem at all getting 30 mpg without trying, I have had as high as 34. Most of my driving is motorway though. I do 1000 miles a week and was really worried about the mpg but in my case I been pleasantly suprised.

Just remember even sedate driving will still propel your car faster than most other things on the road !!

 

I do around 800 miles per week in mine, stop/start and motorway with no probs whatsoever.
I did 590 miles the other weekend on the motorway and it cost me £68 in optimax, that's around 32MPG - and not at 65 MPH.

 

This is similar to what I get with a MY96.....150 - 160 Miles to £25 of Optimax (~24 mpg). This is also mainly urban stop-start driving (and I don't particularly drive with fuel economy in mind).

 

You comments are a bit harsh.

I don't agree. I'm driving perfectly safe. Cars have no problem passing since the motor-ways are pretty free and there's not much traffic. I'm usually driving behind a truck anyway (who should be limited to 56mph) so not holding anyone up. It's up to me what speed I want to drive (within reason).

 

If you drive on a motorway and stick to 70, you should have no probs getting 300+ miles in a scoob.

If ever me and the other half are going off on a long jaunt she normally drives as she's scared of anything over 4000rpm. Managed 321miles before fuel warning light came on - It's an MY00 with decat centre & backbox with STI Panel filter.

 

Am thinking of buying a MY99/00, my m8 who runs a MY00 and has had it since brand new says he gets 34mpg on long runs no problem. I was considering a MG ZS180 the fuel consumption figures for it weren't as good as my m8 said he got from his scoob so I thought what's the point in compromising!

 

I find town driving mpg quite shocking from my MY00 Impreza at times. However as mentioned, long trips off boost and its actually pretty good. I filled my car up on Saturday evening and drove to Cardiff from my town of Haverfordwest which I guess is about 100 - 120 miles and the needle didn't even pass the first "Spot"

Once I drove at a very steady pace from Haverfordwest to Faringdon (oxon) which is 200 miles door to door and with a full tank the needle was bang on half way. Had I just turned round and gone back I think it would have made it without filling up again.

And mines de-catted and ECUTEK'd etc.

 

Got 345 miles out of my WR1 on motorway 75-80 mph and it only took 53L to fill up again.
Preaviously got 32 mpg out of my old uk 99 at steady 85 mph.
